opposite the train station early morning no-one awake
up this morning at 630 and made Esther a coffee in bed must be the romantic air of venice however it was only an instant coffee but it was in bed, anyway enoubh of the romance we had breakfast of toast and jam and another instant coffee Nescafe by the way, and headed off for the train station to retrieve our painting when we arrived we found they were already open and in the process of cleaning the car and the painting was still inside Whew !! that painting cost us 60 bucks !!

back on the train to Venice and we are looking around venice by 930am which mainly consists of looking in shops and pushing past the crowds with the occasional look at a bridge or a dirty waterway the way this place is built is amazing the footings are under the water so they must be on bedrock or they would be undermined in no time, the buildings have no cracking but the bricks are fretting away in some places I bought a present for Stuart here on the ponte di Rialto and bought a genuine painting from a painter nearby of a canal with a gondola

Grande Canal
for only 70 euro about 300 x 500 painted with a spatua and oil paint.

we are now back at our room had lunch and having a rest before having our memorial meeting and then we will head out into the crowds again.

we spent the afternoon first gong to the jewish gheto for a tour of the synagogues and museum where we learnt that it was in 1516 that the jews were first segregated by the pope and 5000 jews were forced to live in the venice ghetto where only 20 live today and that is why there is 5 synagogues, the ghetto was closed with gates and guarded from 6pm to noon the next day and when the jews left the ghetto they had to wear a yellow hat to distinguish them from the christians and they were restricted to 4 employments, selling 2nd hand clothes, physician, or money lender or merchant. you can see where hitler got his armband idea from.

we walked around just exploring and looking in shops until it was time for dinner, which we had not far from our room right on the edge of the water. now its time to pack because we leave tomorrow.
