Day 25 : Monday 30 September 2019 : Lake Como to Lake Garda Off we head to Peschiera del Garda, Lake Garda (prebooked AUD$131). So sad to leave this beautiful place and this fabulous relaxing slice of heaven we called home. On arrival we sorted the train tickets from here to San Candido because I couldn’t book online. Turns out price just doubled ☹it now €150! But its ok, because I booked from San Candido to Lake Bled, a long trip and it was only €32. Just to mix it up, this time our accommodation is a caravan park, on the lake for something different. A nice deluxe 3 bedroom park home!. Butterfly Camping Village. Okay, was smaller than we expected as you can see in the photo Graham can reach both walls and the light ... read more

Guten Tag – we are still in Switzerland. Well for a few more hours. We paid up. Swiss campsites are notoriously expensive coming in at about 23 euros a night. Wouldn’t want to stay on them for too long. We drove through the mountains seeing more and more waterfalls as the snow was beginning to melt. At the same point as normal the sat nav gave up the ghost . It seems the mountains are too high and closed in and the satellites disappear from view. We have got used to it now as it happens so many times. On to the achievement that is the Gotthard Tunnel . We drove through the St Gotthard Tunnel. A marvellous achievement . The Mersey Tunnel pales into insignificance. Mile after mile it runs under the mountains. Nothing gets ... read more

Before breakfast we watched our neighbours heading for the shower blocks in pyjamas and dressing gowns. We pondered whether we perhaps needed these as I am sure they would make showering easier in the cramped cubicles. But somehow I don’t see us as dressing gown wearers in the great outdoors. However needs must and I am sure they will be added to the list of to buy things when we return home. Some decent flip flop shoes might not go amiss either. After breakfast we disconnected the electric to Suzy, switched the fridge from mains electric to battery, checked everything was Ok and set on our way for Italy. We have a ritual now of checking everything before we set off, toilet door closed, cooker door removed, step up and away we go. However we still ... read more

Tuesday 29th March 2011 A long drive today using the motorways to take us along the coast before turning north towards Milan and then east to Lake Garda. The coastal and mountain section is quite spectacular with a series of tunnels and viaducts for many miles – we counted 102 tunnels ! At Lake Garda we took a lakeside stroll to watch the sunset before grabbing a take away pizza from one of the site’s three excellent restaurants – yum. Wednesday 30th March 2011 Chilling, School and Domestics today before an afternoon stroll in the other direction along the lake side. Thursday 31st March 2011 Walk to town today to the local farmer’s market to pick up a few provisions. This included a delicious freshly roasted chicken which we took back to site and ate with ... read more

Wednesday 22nd September 2010 Back on the road and south via Austria and the Brenner Pass to Lake Garda, Italy. A long days drive rewarded with fabulous mountain scenery and the drive down Lake Garda - North to South on the east bank. A hot sunny day and our first taste of real Italian pizza and ice cream. Thursday 23rd September 2010 A relaxing day after yesterday’s long journey with a short walk into Peschiera del Garda along the lakeside. We bought fresh pasta and watched it being made and had a hot milk instead of milky coffee after some local language difficulty around the word Latte - we live and learn ! Afternoon was spent by the pool as at 28 degrees it was about warm enough and the boys wanted to try out the ... read more

I got up early for a run again and went but I first drove small town nearby called Monzambano, just as somewhere different to running by the side of the lake. Yesterday’s guess that the roads were so busy because of everyone heading back to Germany was almost certainly the reason. We were easily able to find some spare sunbeds without towels on them. That was great news, as today was intended to be another relax by the pool day. Our daughter took up the offer of some of the activities – the treasure hunt and some salsa dancing. There was also a football match, which our son jumped at, however, it all seemed to go horribly wrong as the rep left without fully organising it and there was no one to referee (and there was ... read more

After the adventures of the last couple of days, today was another relaxing day by the pool. In the evening, we drove to a very picturesque little town on a narrow spur of land jutting into the south of the lake called Sirmione. We had a walk around the castle and some Roman ruins, which were, unfortunately closed by the time we got there. The main attraction, at least for our two kids that is, was the vast selection ice-cream. Everyone needed to indulge my photography whilst they were eating their ice-creams. There was a really nice sunset across the lake and, once it was starting to get dark, the castle and nearby harbour were illuminated and looked stunning. Thankfully (for me at least) I had had the foresight to bring my camera and tripod with ... read more

I got up early and went for a run down to the lake and along the edge for a while, which was pleasant but, even at that time and even though it was early, it was still hot and humid. There are two things that were quickly apparent about holidaying in Italy: the first is that it's very expensive, although this is probably more to do with the state of the pound than Italian prices. We went to a local supermarket to stock-up and we were really quite shocked by the prices. The second is that it’s very popular with the German’s. There were virtually no Brits there, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing (see ). We thought we would spend our first day by the pool, but it was a given that there was ... read more

After three years of long flights and a lot of moving around (see , and ), it was clear that we needed to head off a potential rebellion from the kids and go to somewhere closer to home this year. And this was even though one of them had included Disney World in Florida (see ) and another included Disneyland in Hong Kong (see ). We chose Lake Garda in northern Italy. The flight was to Verona, where we would then pick-up a hire car and drive to Lake Garda. We were staying in the same hotel for the whole holiday, but having a car would still give us some freedom to move about. Hopefully, that way, everyone would be happy. Things did not get off to a great start. We had a lovely new BMW ... read more
