On day 4 of our trip (June 5), we took a day trip to Assisi. What an enchanting little hill town! As our train pulled into the station, we saw the prominent town, nestled into the hill...very green and pretty. Not only is it a major pilgrimage site, but it's such a serene and friendly town, surrounded by scenic countryside. From the station, we took a bus that went up the hill and into town. After visiting several basilicas and walking around town on the quaint cobble stoned streets, we had a lunch break in a pizzeria. The food was noticeably more fresh and tasty than in Rome... or we were just high on our beautiful surroundings...whatever it was, lunch was great. We meandered through town visiting more basilicas and stopping off here and there to ... read more

Jeff and I had to switch trains to go to Assisi. Once again, we had to ride a bus into the town of Assisi. Fortunately, our hotel, Hotel Berti, was located just inside the city walls. We got into our room and since no one was there yet we decided to walk up the hill to the Basilica of St. Francesco. Jeff and I walked all around the Basilica and viewed the lower church as well as the upper church as well as the tombs below where St. Francis is entombed. The entire Basilica was covered with frescoes and all types of carved wood and rock. The floors were tiled. Thinking that Carla and Don could have arrived by now we returned to our hotel to wait for them. They arrived soon thereafter as well as ... read more

On Thursday we drove to Assisi and Cortona. We wanted to do more but Assisi took time to reach and we spent more time there than expected. It was the prettiest town we have seen. Very clean. The balconies of the homes all have flowers and they have a competition once a year for the best front door-balcony. We walked thru the town and made our way to the Basilica of St. Francis. For those of you that dont know, St. Francis taught equality between man, woman and animal thru Gods teachings. He is the Saint in the brown robe and usually has birds around him. The Basilica was really pretty and on the edge of the hill town. His tomb is in the lower Basilica which was amazing to see. Several people make a pilgrimage ... read more

Easter Monday dawned fine again, it’s been 9 days since we had any rain and the weather has been great. There was a queue to leave the campsite again but that was ok, they even refunded our unused bus tickets - bonus! The drive to Passignano was only another 80km and we had managed to successfully avoid toll roads since Pisa, a decision we had consciously made to try and enable us to see more of the countryside. The drawback is that the roads are nowhere near as well maintained even though a lot of them are still motorways. It was worthwhile trying to dodge the poorly repaired sections as they tended to rattle the bones a bit. We drove out of Tuscany and into Umbria but the landscape didn’t change much, a few more green ... read more

Last week was spent in Assisi, Perugia, Norcia, and Campi. That's the main reason why I haven't had time to update. Besides the small vacation, we also had an Art and History final today and a paper due today as well. Assisi was great! We made it to the basilicas of St. Francis and St. Claire on the first day. We also got to see the birthplace of St. Francis. It was nice to finally get to learn about the basilica of St. Francis, because on my last trip I didn't learn much about it. The people who work there are REALLY strict and shh you the whole time, so it's nearly impossible for anyone to explain anything in the church. However, this trip, our professor had us all rent headsets and he spoke into a ... read more

Hello from Assisi. This morning we woke up early at around 7:45, boarded a train, and traveled 3 hrs by bus to a small town north east of Rome called Assisi. The town was much quieter then 2 years ago when I went during the summer of 2006 when it was tourist season. This time the pictures were easier to snap without getting random people and everything seemed more tranquil. Our tour guide was excellent and we learned a great deal about the history of Saint Francis of Assisi who gave up his noble life to live with the poor and preach the word of God. The tour guide showed us around the Basilica of S. Francesco filled with wonderful paintings, arches, and statues. No pictures allowed inside so you wont see any posted. Sorry guys. ... read more

So I had to wake up at 7 to prepare for the weekend trip to Assisi! All the IES students looked groggy as we waited to board the bus, on which I immediately passed out and woke up in the beautiful town of Assisi. The town was very quiet compared to when I last visited, probably due to the fact that right now isn’t a very big time for tourists to visit. We went on a tour of the churches - St. Francesco Basilica and St. Chiara Basilica - in Assisi. Our tour guide was very nice and a lot more informative than the previous tour I was on two years ago. I learned about the life of Saint Francis and how he devoted it to helping the poor and giving up all his riches to ... read more

It rained overnight and Saturday started as a grey morning. We had a deadline of 9:00 am to return the hirecar to the local airport, so that was the focus of our morning. We were on our way, following the instructions dictated by the GPS. "recalculating...."oops, not again. Sometimes the most direct route is the tiniest of back streets. Roadblock. "recalculating....." silence. then more silence. "sorry, can't calculate new route..." blank screen. blank screen and silence. bugger, look for signs. Yes, the airport! all good, hand the keys back and no more driving for a while. Now all we have to do is get back to Perugia and then the bus to Assisi. The buses are slow, but don't you get to see a lot of the local scenery. As we debussed at the city gates ... read more

On Saturday I had my first trip outside Perugia. I went with about 9 other people to Assisi, a town about 25 minutes east of Perugia by train. We left Perugia at 10:30am from the Train station. It was really easy to get on the train and go. All we had to do was buy tickets at the electronic booth and then validate them before we got on the train. The train was pretty comfortable and was really quick and the tickets only cost about 5 euro roundtrip. In Assisi I saw Il Basilico da San Rufino, Rocca Maggiore (a castle), and Il Basilico da San Francesco. The Basilicas were amazing! Inside there were frescos that had been painted several hundred years ago, tombs of Saints, and beautiful religious statues. For any that know me really ... read more
