Today was checkout day from Sez's massively under equipped AirB&B so we rose, showered (thankful it would be our last shower in that horribly blocked shower tray), ate our breakfast from our €1 bowls (sharing my travel spoon, thanks Sez) and wandered across Piazza Leopoldo to catch the #4 bus again, to Firenze SMN station. We dropped our bags at the left luggage with the grumpiest staff member we've seen so far (to the point of it being comical), I grabbed a coffee and we went for a wander around the area near the station and found a market for me to search for my Florence patch. We then headed back and boarded our train to Pisa. Rather than sliding doors, this train had little glass swing doors, like something out of a futuristic bar in ... read more

Our last morning, we enjoyed our final breakfast at Sole De Luna and then off to the train station. We are proud of the fact that we haven't missed a train or gotten on the wrong train the entire trip. It was a great way to be able to see so much of this beautiful country. After a few days we were able to read the schedules, navigate the ticket machines easily and Alec was the mater of remembering to validate the tickets before we boarded the trains. Our plan was to spend the day in Pisa, seeing the sites there, and then returning to Florence for dinner and a very early morning flight! We are all pretty tired from the week and it was very hot this particular day. We were able to store our ... read more

We had to leave Venice pretty early on the Tuesday morning, so had almost no chance to see what you would normally see - but at least managed to see some Gondolas on our way to the train station while on the Vaporetti...We made it to our train on time, and had our first experience of being "hustled" - someone on the train helping people to get their luggage up the stairs and in the storage area - then finding them in the seats and requesting money. Luckily I was assisted by a local who knew the routine. The train to Florence was a high speed FrecciaRosa - complimentary snack and drink, comfy seats and all the charging ports a 14 year old could want - we changed to a local "Regionale" train from Florence to ... read more

Geo: 43.7161, 10.3966Did we tell you we were stopping by Pisa today? Christy IV only made one small error. Pretty good for her, so we drove in and out rather easily. Bird is now complaining that there has been no mention of her new best friend, the wine guy. Three doors down from our apt in La Spezia there was a "loose wine" shop where people could bring any sort of empty bottle and fill her up and rather good prices. Yes, of course, we have a picture.By the way we are now in Rome. Will be here for the next seven days. We'll keep ... read more

Due to the geographic location by the Arno River and near the sea to developed its maritime power, Pisa was prosperous during the Roman time and left behind many great monuments. Perhaps the name of the Leaning Tower of Pisa probably too big for this small city, everyone just bee around The Piazza dei Miracoli and let the rest of the city unattended. Not many people realized that Galileo Galilei - the greatest scientists of all time was born in Pisa. And there are many quiet small alleys one could explore, especially around Piazza Giovan Battista Donati, or visit the grand Piazza dei Cavalieri. The main through fare of the old city is extend from the Ponte di Mezzo bridge from both side of the Arno River. many shops and cafe could be found on Corso ... read more

Today we have a long day of travelling to Cinque Terre on Italy's north-west coast, via Florence and Pisa. We wake up early. Scott and Emma have organised an extended family gathering for Troy's birthday and we're keen to ring in to the party. Issy browsed through photos of home yesterday and said they made her feel homesick. I then reminded her about the winter weather and she quickly recovered. Ringing home does however remind us that we're a long way from those we love, and we do wish we could have been there for this occasion. It's again very quiet in the breakfast room, and I'm again in trouble for clanging my spoon against the edge of my cereal bowl too loudly. Issy says that the mysterious machine is in fact a toaster and she ... read more

We actually heard that question today. A Middle Eastern man asked that of an Asian woman walking by his establishment, and I couldn't help but laugh. The morning was probably my favorite time, since we got to sleep in a little and have a really good breakfast at the hotel. Our first stop was the ticket office for the Tower. It cost 18€ to go up, and this included admission to the Duomo, too. We had also heard good things about the Camposanto (an area with many tombstones inside of a long colonnaded building), and that cost an extra 5€. You have to either order your ticket online or show up at the ticket office and take whatever time slot they give you - they only let so many people in at a time. We got ... read more
