How could one not go to a market described as “Mercato Straodinario”? We set off this morning thinking this event was taking place near the Porta St Anna one of the gates to the old city, but when we got there, absolutely nothing was happening! The famous composer, Giacomo Puccini is a native of Lucca so we decided to check out his birthplace instead. It is tucked into the corner of one of the smaller piazzas and has been converted into a museum, while still managing to retain the features of the original house…you actually have to ring a bell and go upstairs to get in. As well as hearing strains of Puccini’s music playing in the background, you can see his piano, his original marked scores, letters to and from his wife and his publisher Riccordo, programs and photos from his operas and a magnificent costume from Turandot, all in the house as it was furnished at the time Puccini lived in it. Apart from the presence of a large, loud Italian tour group it was an uplifting experience. On the way back for lunch we happened upon some interesting street theatre in the Piazza San Michele.

return we re-checked the ad for the market and realized that it was in the St Anna REGION of the newer Lucca, not far outside the walls of the old city. Off we went again and this time found it easily. It was indeed “straordinario” in size stretching along the Viale Giacomo Puccini for at least a kilometre. The goods on offer were not that great however, unless you wanted very tight jeans, puffer jackets, undies, sox or plastic flowers. It was a great atmosphere though and more family-oriented than what goes on inside the old city walls where there are lots of beautifully-dressed, cool younger people.
