Levanto to Lucca
Beautifully crafted seats in a gelateria in LevantoHeaded into Levanto to withdraw a large sum of money to pay for our 3 weeks in the apartment we had booked in Lucca. As Lucca is only about 100km from Levanto and we had arranged to check in at 2pm, we decided to call in to the beachside town, Forte dei Marmi, for no particular reason other than it was on our map and we needed a coffee. The Appennine ranges near this town are rich in marble and other minerals and this town has grown rich from the proceeds. The main street was full of luxury outlets…Gucci, Prada, Armani etc and everyone there (except us) looked prosperous. We had a pretty bad cappuccino in a luxurious coffee shop and headed to the beach which was flat, brown sand divided into sections for private use.
As we approached Lucca it started to rain heavily. Our host, Filippo asked us to meet him in Lucca Est McDonald’s car park at 2pm. We got there with plenty of time to spare but had huge difficulty finding a parking spot as the Italians seem to have embraced McDonald’s with their usual zest! Lounge area with exposed beams lunch there…something we haven’t done for years! It was packed & very noisy and the food was terrible. Filippo finally found us in the rain and escorted us to a parking spot just outside the city walls then took us and our baggage in his car into the narrow streets of the Centro Historico. He and his wife Rossella were charming and hospitable…the 3-bedroom place they have rented to us is lovely and better than seen in the pictures attached. We’re looking forward to Jon, Mon, Jess & her cousin Rosie joining us here on October 15.
