"Would you ever have imagined you'd be sunbathing on a beach in Italy?", questioned my beloved. I gazed across the brilliant blue water of the Liguarian Sea at the rock island lighthouse and dozens of sailboats in the crisp southern breeze and dreamily whispered, "Not ever." The beach of Elba is white stone and although the stones are smooth, they are treacherous to scamper to the sea water. We indeed looked like "not from around here", again, as we were not wise enough to be shod in water shoes for swimming here in Elba. On this sunny Sunday young families spread their compliment of chairs and toys and babies filled buckets with pebbles rather than sand. A lovely young 6 year old girl swam in just a pink bikini bottoms and scuba mask as her lanky ... read more

ISOLA D ELBA We got invited away for the weekend to go to elba with David’s family; the local soccer club from pallerone was going. Little did we know when we said yes was we would have to get up at 4AM. We have to be up at 6.45am to take the kids to school, but not 4am. We made it and in typical Italian style the bus was meant to leave at 4.45am and around 5.45 it left, I don’t even get upset or mad anymore. We drove to catch the Ferry which was around 2 hours and then on the boat for an hour and half, David and I would like to do a cruise one day. We have decided perhaps we are not cruise type people; we didn’t cope well with the 1.30min ... read more

For their second week of vacation, Cecilia and Andrea moved us to the Isle of Elba. We caught the ferry at Piombino and arrived in the main port of Elba, called Portoferraio. A little history: this was the island where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to and one of his villas is located on the shores of Portoferraio (yeah, he really suffered here with a couple of villas to stay in). Even though the campground premises were somewhat similar to those of Cielo Verde (a little too cheesy and convenient for my liking), this week was much better because we went out of the campground every day to do something different on the island, and of course, we were on a beautiful island to begin with! One day we took a small boat back to Portoferraio from ... read more

What a beautiful time we are having together! A fabulous hike from our little town of Chiessi into the next little town of Pomonte where we discovered yet ANOTHER great gelateria. There are soooo many not-so-good gelaterias, but somehow we keep stumbling on the organic, pure and divinely fresh gelato wherever we go! First in Florence at "Grom", then in Marina Di Campo (where I am writing from right now as it is one of the only towns equipped with internet) at "Zero Gradi" (officially our favorite) and then "Gelateria Artiginale" in Pomonte. My favorite flavors in this order (so far) are Nociola (Hazelnut), Pera (pear), Pistaccio, Bacia (chocolate with hazelnuts), and Banana. Katrina almost always goes for Fior di Panna and Pistaccio and Hazelnut. We swam in the meditteranean again today, despite being the only ... read more

Today is my mothers birthday! Katrina and I just finished swimming in the meditteranean sea in the town of Marina Di Campo on the southern part of the island of Elba! We took a bus here, only a half hour from our little town where we are staying called Chiessi. This is PARADISE. It is exactly what we were looking for: quiet, peaceful, infinitely small and not too touristy at all which cannot be said about most of this island. We are bonding, connecting, and of course every once and a while having a sisterly interaction, and over all our trip is entirely in the flow as I like to say. Yesterday was an entire day of travel by bus, train and then ferry, then more bus to the island and then to our little town ... read more
