Taormina/Letojanni
Rest day as I now had symptoms of a cold as well as Tom.

Taormina/Letojanni
Into Taormina to computer shop – but still no printer cartridges that I had ordered 3 weeks ago. Back to Letojanni village for a walk around. Started at the southern end of the village that we had not been to before and we found a shop that sold good beach chairs, snorkel and goggles, flippers and a towel - and they delivered them back to the campsite for us. Walked around some more, then back to the campsite to try out the beach chairs.
The ocean had warmed up enough for me to go in for 5 minutes :-) .
Finished packing up the van – ready to leave tomorrow.

Puglia/Otranto
Up and left by 8.30am and headed for Otranto, Puglia. We made it as far as Policoro and stayed at a campsite that seemed to be under renovations. €20 for the night but only worth €8 – facilities were few and far between but a great location.

2011
Not much sleep as there were celebrations on from 9.30pm until 2am and I am worse with the flu. We left at 10am for Otranto – and remembered it is a public holiday, therefore the Hymer dealer will be closed.
Yep, we arrived at the dealers and it is closed, so we set up camp in the side road – no one around as it is in an industrial area.
Friday 3rd June 2011
Hymer dealer opened up at 8.30am, so in we go. Organized for new shock air bags for back of camper, new shocks for front, 2 new vent hoods to replace the broken ones, and a front window insulation cover and new mattress. We went ahead with this as we have decided to keep the camper and store it when we return to Aussie.
It was fun organizing this what with my limited Italian, but all sorted for 13th June and it will take about 4 days to do the work.
So off we head to the campsite. It’s 4.5km from school. It’s a large campsite, pool, restaurant, small supermarket, and a very small beach with cliffs and small grottoes. Tom happy and said we
could stay all summer as lots of snorkeling to be done, and bike riding. I am still coughing and not well, so for the next week for me is lots of rest.
Saturday 4th June 2011
Lousy sleep as Club Med is 1km up the road, and their music booms all the way down to the camp site. They go til 2am. The camp site staff said they are always ringing them with complaints from people, but nothing is done as they bring much money in and the police don’t do anything.
Me, still coughing and resting. Tom went swimming.
Sunday 5th June 2011.
Tom heads out for a mountain bike ride looking at the coast. He decided he would look into hiring a kayak for a day or two as it is looks magic here.
Wednesday 8th June 2011.
Went into town on scooter and eventually found the railway station and the school. I booked in for 2 weeks starting 13th June. We also booked an excursion with the school for tomorrow as they are going to an olive oil factory and a winery. Back to campsite. Tom went for a MTB ride and swim in
the pool.
He made spaghetti for dinner. The sauce was of garlic, onion, cherry tomatoes, chilly ketchup, blue vein cheese and honey. He doesn’t think he could sell the recipe !!!
Thursday 9th June 2011
I rested in the morning. Tom did 44kms ride and then a big swim.
At 3pm we went out with other students from the school on the excursion. At olive oil factory we bought some very spicy olive oil. Very nice. Then onto the winery. A family business for 75 years called ‘Palama”. It was great fun. The company is small and they are a blender of local wines and grapes, and have won for the last 4 years the best Rose’ in the world. They have a bottle filling set-up with a least 10 outlets, so people come in and buy or bring in their own plastic 4 litre container and they fill them either one or a mix of the wines for sale. Then they have an air driven rattle gun for screwing on the top. So we bought 5 bottles – 2 sweet, 1 white, 1 red, 1 rose’ - €39 and good quality.
A German couple bought 5 boxes as
the cost in Germany is far greater and they use them for gifts for the family.
So, back to Otranto and out for dinner – bloody awful as the restaurant was trying to do USA and English food and not doing it good at all – so won’t be going back there especially when we want to eat the local Italian food.
Back to camper about 11.30pm. Getting better on scooter. Even when going into town and there was roadwork’s and the road closed – no worries we ride on the footpath with all the other scooter riders – aah, only in Italy !!
Friday 10th June 2011.
Another rest day for both of us.
Saturday 11th June 2011.
I rested and revised my Italian.
Tom 43km ride and 700m swim.
Tidied up camper and put away the winter clothing, moved things around in the cupboards – now we just hope we can remember where everything is!!
Sunday 12th June 2011.
Tom packed up the tent and everything else as the camper is in for repairs tomorrow.
Disappointed that I have been unwell and have not been able to get around to do any sightseeing, but have
just had no energy and needed to get better asap.
