Adventures in Alghero…stunning views, stereotypical family antics, smiles, sunshine and smuggling. I have been sharing my house in London with a lovely Sardinian woman, L, for about a year now and she has always said that I must come to Alghero with her sometime. Trying to align our busy schedules was a challenge but we finally decided on a Sunday and Monday in mid-October. The direct flights from London-Alghero don’t go on Saturdays and she had to work on Friday. The forecast looked warm and sunny and that with the promise of Sardinian food and relaxation made the decision easy. We were picked up in a taxi at 4am on Sunday morning which was slightly painful but the promise of breakfast in Alghero kept my glass half full so to speak. Stansted Airport is a place ... read more

If you saw Day one of this year’s Tour De France bike race you will recall that one of the first stages ended in the city of Calvi on the island of Corsica. This is where we started day 5 of the cruise and everything has been very good so far – today was no exception. The weather is still fine, with low to mid 20 degree temperatures. Our excursion was to some of the islands interesting villages. The first two were in the foothills of the island’s mountains. While in the second one, perched at the top of a hill, Geoff climbed a very steep and rocky pathway to a magnificent view across the flat plain to the sea. Back on the coast, as we made our way back to Calvi, we stopped for a ... read more

Geo: 40.9225, 9.48685We all met at 8am, our group of 8, at the pier and after spotting our driver for the day, got in our van and headed out to explore Sardinia, an island off the coast of Italy. The port city of Olbia isn't much so we went to more popular places where the rich people go. We went to several small resort villages where the Arabs and rich Europeans spend their summers, sitting on their grand yachts and comparing each others boats to see whose is bigger or fancier. The homes here cost as much as €25k per sq meter. The shopping center we visited is not so busy now that the season is over but it's pricey. Gucci, Versace, Rolex and Armani were just some of the names. I managed to steer Karen ... read more

Geo: 40.9225, 9.48685Mom had her nail appointment this morning at 8 so she left early. I went up to the pool, grabbed a coffee and worked on the blog until she was finished. Then we got a light breakfast, went to sign up for a kitchen tour that never happened because we were in the wrong room and then went down to the computer room so I could download pictures for the blog. Mom got on the regular ship computer to check email and got so engrossed in Queenie stuff that she used up 75 minutes just like that. Then we did some errands (yes, even on the ship). We took it easy today. Mom had a lot on her mind. We ate dinner later that night, went to a show and then up to the Crow's ... read more

What an absolutely stunning location for a relaxing Summer holiday. The weather was perfect, beaches beautiful, water crystal clear, and food as always unbelievably yummy. Italy, yet again has not let us down. We must recommend that you try and stay with a fab couple who run a gorgeous little B&B http://raimblanc.it/ - they will be sure to let you experience a real Sardinian lifestyle. You'll be enjoying a delicious breakfast consisting of local produce, and won't have to worry about hiring a beach umbrella or towels... Giovanni and Consolata (the B&B owners) made our stay memorable and made us fall in love with Alghero. We will be back!... read more

Sardinia, We arrived here this morning to wet weather and how clouds and debated whether to stay onboard or not.. but you only come to a place like this once so decided to head offshore and see what we could make of the place. It's like a lot of the islands which are built on the mountainsides so uphill walks... killers, and eventually you find it's all worthwhile. No protests here but the usual Morrocans selling stuff and the high end shops are around too. We walked around the old city - which is up very, very high and eventually we found a way in and thank God we found a lift on the outside so we were able to get to the heights of the old city. Again amazing views of the sea and the ... read more

Sardinia The weather today is perfect, 72 degrees with a fresh breeze and no humidity. We docked in Cagliari, waited for the early rush ashore to end and hopped a bus to the Castello area of the city. It dropped us off near the Cittadella dei Musei, a museum complex that is home to the National Picture Gallery, the Narional Archeological Museum and Communal Arts Gallery and the Regional Ethnographic Museum. All were closed. Bummer! This is the highest part of the town and there are still some of the old walls left. The views from here were wonderful. What was supposed to be a hop-on-hop-off bus never made its appearance so we left the bewildered and disgruntled tourists and decided to walk back to the port. I love looking at the old buildings, most kept ... read more

Sicily to Sardinia – the Hunt for Auntie Sally (Cameron) Dolphins: I was down below deck having a snore zzzzzz when mum shouts “dolphins!” I walked up on deck like a dozy teenager like when teenager’s mums say “get up you lazy boy”. Then I walked up as if I was an old man, and I saw two dolphin’s one baby one mum or dad they played and played and played as if there was a sign saying come here dolphins they then played at the bow and jumped and then when life itself seemed not to get any better they went. It was like “come on time for tea” like it had never happened but by the next day it was as if the latest film had just come out. Night watch: On ... read more
