Estamos en Italia, bien contentos ... read more

Living in Switzerland close to Interlaken on the Lake Thun it sounds crazy to go skiing somewhere else than in front of our doorstep. But, well, a day of "only" skiing in Switzerland for two people costs about the same as a day skiing in Italy including accomodation, sauna and food. And sometimes it is just great to escape your daily life for a few days, isn't it? So that is what we did. For 5 days to packed the car and drove south for some serious skiing and boarding. We had decided to discover a new region for us. Our final destination was Alagna Valesesia in the Sesia Valley on foot of the gigantic Monte Rosa. Well, Monte Rosa is not one mountain - it consists of many summits which are the highest in the ... read more

We woke up in our little B&B in Premosello Chiovenda, a small village in the Ossola Valley between Lago di Mergozzo and Domodossola, with sunshine and a blue sky. Fantastic. This is why we came to Italy over the weekend - to escape the rain at home in the northern Alps in Switzerland. We had a shower, packed our few belongings and left. We still had not really an idea what to do today - well, do not get us wrong. There are many, many things to do in this region with great hiking, mountains and the Lago Maggiore close by. But we really enjoyed the Sacro Monte (Holy Mountain) we visited the day before in Domodossola. And we did not bring our hiking gear. What better way to discuss this with a breakfast in a ... read more

Autumn was hitting Switzerland and with it coming the foggy, wet and rainy time. We love autumn when it comes to clear skyies, sun and coloured leaves. And we did have that this year a lot. But there was this specific weekend and the weatherforecast was exactly the „rainy, grey skies with lots of cold wind“. No thank you for us. As weh ad nothing planned we decided on Friday to give this weather a miss and to run towards Italy for some late summer warmth. Well, by train it takes only 1,5 hours from our hometown Thun to Domodossola, the first city after the boarder in Italy. For whatever reason we never did this short trip. Reasons enough to go! By looking for a cheap room for the night we realised that we were not ... read more

My last 2-week camp with ACLE was up in Domodossola. Most Italians had heard of this 18,000 person town in the north of the country’s Piedmont region because when they spell things, they say ‘D as in Domodossola’. It’s also notable for being the first major rail station across the border from Switzerland. Oh, and it has a sanctuary which is a popular pilgrimage site (Sacro Monte Calvario) for Catholics. For me, Domodossola represented my dreams of being back in the cool and beautiful mountains after two weeks in Cremona’s heat. The town itself where the camp took place is actually in a valley, but it was slightly cooler than Cremona had been. I lucked out with my host family, because they stayed in an apartment in the mountains in the summer instead of in the ... read more

Today I recommend... a nice slice of polenta! No, I’m not talking about food. Today I’m taking you on a journey to the first capital of Italy, Turin, to visit a very curious building: Casa Scaccabarozzi, also known with the name of Slice of Polenta, which is one of the narrowest buildings in the world with one of its side measuring just 54 centimetres! The nickname commonly attributed by the people of Turin, Slice of Polenta, is most probably given by the curious shape of the building, that make it resembling a real slice , but also its characteristic yellow colour. The building, built in 1840, has got a triangular shape (16 metres x 5 metres x 54 centimetres) and consists of 9 floors, 2 of which are underground, all connected through an internal staircase. Turin, the home of Fiat. Why did we want to stay here? Originally we had planned for a three night stay but as it got closer to book our accommodation we decided two nights would be enough. After yesterday’s awful drive we are pleased we decided on two nights. Our apartment is comfortable and we don’t mind the slow start today. Once we get ourselves organized we’ll visit a tabacchi and buy two 24 hour bus tickets. It is only a short distance into the centre of Turin but the bus is best. Last night’s washing is dry, a breakfast of cereals, yoghurt and some brioche filled with apricot jam purchased that morning (we think baked the day before), the day planned, and we’re off. We walk to the nearest tabacchi, not that close, and get ... read more

We wake to another wet morning. Thunderstorms have been sweeping across northern Italy for the past week. In the south it is hot and dry. In spite of all this rain we have not worn our raincoats. We have been lucky enough to get our sightseeing completed before the rain starts. We just hope we can pack the car without getting wet. Time for breakfast and a chance to say farewell to our friends in the bar. Today they are discussing the outcome of next year’s World Cup, a favourite topic in Italy. There is so much football on TV and in the papers. Perhaps they are discussing the future of their pension. We leave and thank everyone for making our stay enjoyable. Each morning we wake to the baking smells of the panificio next door. ... read more

This morning the weather is a little kinder but we have the feeling any sunshine will not be with us for long. There is low cloud around the hills that climb above the lake. Our plan after breakfast is to visit the resort town of Stresa on Lago Maggiore, a short drive away. We have heard so much about this town we felt we needed to take the time and pay it a visit. Also on the list for today is a visit to two factory shops selling home wares. But first, breakfast. Down in the bar the locals are in the middle of an animated discussion. We say a friendly “buon giorno” and receive the same in reply. Then the discussion continues. We feel on top of the world, the yachting world. We decide the ... read more

It is a slow start today. This is Italy, we’re in the Italian lake district, and we can be a bit slow. On the other hand the forecast is not brilliant. We have to plan for thunderstorms. The temperatures have been getting hotter and the humidity is rising. Something has to give. So we decide on a plan. Breakfast is provided downstairs in the bar, then drive to Orta San Giulio for a lake cruise, lunch, and back before the rain. The drive to Orta doesn’t take very long. There is a ferry service but the timetable doesn’t account for the possibility of rain. On a day like this it pays to be independent. As we drive the short distance it is obvious the weekend revellers have gone. All is quiet. Once in Orta we find ... read more
