As the title of this blog indicates there were a few challenges to our travel but more to come on that. The morning, after enjoying breakfast in the hotel’s panoramic breakfast room overlooking the lake and the Alps, started with another walk by the lake to keep the legs stretched out before our 2 hour trip from Lausanne to Stresa. The views across to Evian and Thonon ( both places we have enjoyed) was stunning with the sun glinting off the water. Very relaxing. Later we headed up the steep hills to reach the old town with its impressive gothic cathedral, which is amazing inside with an impressive organ and console - it would be good to try that out! The building was so peaceful and the colours of the stained glass windows created amazing colours ... read more

From Pisa, we made our way to Barolo which was a long drive filled with my father and I playing the name game, a game where someone names someone famous and the next person has to name someone who starts with the letter of the last name. Out of the entire trip, Barolo would be one of the most nostalgic. First, we settled into our hotel (Agriturismo Il Ciabot) which was the same hotel we stayed the last 3 times we were in Barolo. The owner was very nice and actually had a picture of me from long ago. It is walking distance from the center of town (which is only a few streets). It was already evening, and we ended up seeing our friends at a restaurant and decided to join them. The next day ... read more

Admittedly I am writing this blog some time after the actual trip, and so the sun soaked intensity of the entire experience is somewhat muted. Isn’t that always the way with the limitation of words? I still thought it worth documenting what was a vacation, a studious affair, the pursuit of a passion and the exploration of a potential future in food. I spent a week at the L'Università degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche (the University of Gastronomic Sciences UNISG) in Bra; the home of the Slow Food movement. I chose rather than the university accommodation, a nearby hotel. I was after all an adult student and far beyond the years of scraping by on my university overdraft facility. The entire experience was reminiscent of starting a new programme, of meeting new friends, of learning, creating, ... read more

Today is a really relaxed start, as we won't be hitting the road until 9:00. So after a quick breakfast, we bid a fond farewell to Santa Margherita, and board the coach for Lake Maggiore. Lake Maggiore is in the upper northwest area of Italy near the border with Switzerland. This is a 3 hour bus ride, the longest we have some so far. So with plenty of time on the road, Anna gave us a quick synopsis of the days activities, and used the remaining time to settle up our bills for the optional excursions. With a WiFi credit card machine on the bus, it didn't take her long. As we left Santa Margherita, the mountains began to quickly subside and we were quickly in the flat farmland of the northwest. So for the next ... read more

In late May, the European Conference of Work and Organizational Psychology took me to Turin in Italy. I arrived there in the evening and met a few acquaintances in the airport. They were, of course, going to attend the conference as well. We shared a taxi into the city, I checked into my hotel and then met my former colleagues Richie, Lena, and Mats for a very tasty Italian dinner. The Italian cuisine is one of my favourite cuisines, and I love Italy in general: not only the food, the ice-cream and the coffee (I usually drink way too much coffee when I’m there just because I like it so much, so my heart is racing quite often), but also the people, the language (it is so passionate), the landscapes, the many historic sites one can ... read more

We drove through the rain and the mountains in France popping in and out of various tunnels through the alps until eventually we came into sunshine and Italia. As we headed for our first destination Sue called them and persuaded them to change our booking from Tuesday night to Sunday so we could stop there that night. We arrived late afternoon to agriturismo La Torricella in bright sunshine and at least 10 degrees warmer than when we left Annecy a few hours earlier. Fantastic spot above the town of Monfort D’alba this hilltop setting was perfect, with vineyard & restaurant, a favourite of Shelagh & Chris. We sat outside with a glass of their wine looking over the numerous hilltop towns. There was also a christening party which added to the ambience. After checking out we ... read more

This morning was a beautiful, clear and sparkling day on Lake Maggiore. It was hard to think about leaving. Last night we hung out on the rooftop, drinking a little wine, watching the sunset all around the Lake. It is a stunning place! Before we leave the Lake District I have a quiz for my readers. What do you think this part of the bathroom fixture is for? See photo. The Hotel de Palma was renovated in recent times and it is modern and lovely. We boarded a bus and headed South, driving through wine country with hillsides terraced with vineyards and topped by medieval towns. Our destination was Barolo, a town that is not even on most maps, but is home to a great Italian wine producer of the same name. We had a tour ... read more

This morning we woke to a rainy day, enjoyed a wonderful breakfast buffet, and boarded a bus at 9:00 headed to Lake Orta. The smallest of the Italian lakes it is called "Cinderella" in Italian because it is beautiful, and I guess, waiting to be discovered. The lakes are all the result of the last Ice Age, when glaciers covered this region. Como is the deepest. Garda is the largest. They are all surrounded by low mountains (up to about 4000 ft), which enhances their beauty. We arrived at Lake Orta and had to detour through a large industrial town, Obegna, because we came upon a closed tunnel. Due to the recent collapse of the bridge in Genoa, many roads and bridges are closed for inspection to diminish the chances of future failures. Igor tells us ... read more
