We didn't have anything planned for today, so I finally got to sleep in and not set an alarm! Liana and I both decided against going to the beach like we had considered on Friday, instead choosing to stay in Urbino and study (midterms are this Tuesday!!). We walked up to the top of mountain/hill that Urbino's on where the fortress is. There's a huge green space with a couple trees and we sat there for a couple hours enjoying the pleasant breeze and the beautiful view while studying. Not much else happened today, besides a nice walk with a couple friends after dinner to digest a little and work off my second plate of pasta of the day. I've had so much pasta (at least once a day, usually twice....) it can't be healthy. Can't ... read more

I just finished lunch in the Menza (their equivalent of a cafeteria) and am full beyond belief. Italians for lunch and dinner have a first plate (pasta), a second plate (entree and two sides), and dessert/fruit. I get all the plates because otherwise the cashier people don't like it, but I can only really eat the pasta, side and fruit. I had planned on going to the beach today, but the plan changed and now I'm going into town (Urbino) to walk around and the like with a group of friends. Unfortunately, it's incredibly hot and sunny. I'm going to be drinking water constantly and sweating...I mean glowing ;) profusely. In class we're working on regular verb conjugations in the present tense and our vocabulary in general. We were supposed to play Taboo, but we asked ... read more

Italia Not quite the start of the real travelling but we've just spent 5 days in the Marches with Gus, Sarah, Gaz and Em. The village of Auditore was lovely. We got to see San Marino, San Leo and Urbino, which was all good. Spent most of the time stuffing our faces and drinking cheap village wine for €4 a litre! We've finally sorted out some plans and booked flights to Cape Town, so ignore the previous idea about Japan. We're saving that for March next year! We've also hired a car once we get to Cape Town, so the plan is to drive round S Africa, Botswana and Namibia for 2 months. It's our last day at work tomorrow for a year!... read more

It wasn't long until I found myself studying Italian in one of the world's biggest secrets of a town. The name is Urbino, and if you look for it on a map you may have to enlarge it four times. But it's a piece of heaven on earth with the kindest of people and the most beautiful of landscape. With rolling hills and Renaissance architecture, the town's history dates back centuries ago with the castle Pallazo Ducale resting in the center. Walking up the stone-cobbled streets feels like walking through a movie set. In fact, it's a sure way to make friends and family believe you were really spending the summer photoshoping yourself in pictures. But even the most vivid of imaginations could not come up with this scene. The piazza filled with laughing voices, ... read more
