The clouds which had started to form yesterday had firmly camped over Aprica by the time we woke up. We had our breakfast and headed off to the slopes in the hope that during the climb up we would rise above them. This did not happen and the cloud was still present 900 metres above the town. We decided to try the run we enjoyed the previous morning but the visibility was down to a few metres in places and the wide open slope at the other end of the run was completely in white out conditions. We ran down the slope by following the markers at the edge of the run. We skied back to the top station of the middle gondola as this area had trees and they help visibility in white out conditions. ... read more

Yesterday was the travelling day. We stayed near Heathrow overnight so it only took a few minutes to get to the terminal. The trip through to Milan was easy and we collected our baggage and headed for the espresso machine in the arrivals area. We were delayed leaving the airport as some of the party we were travelling with had lost their luggage so we did not get to the hotel until after 6pm. Then it was a rush to get the ski equipment for JJ before dinner and bed. The morning came with sunshine and a light dusting of snow and the mountains dominated the view from the bedroom window. The ski lifts opened at 8.30 and we were on the slopes, all breakfasted, by 9.00. The nearest lift is behind the hotel opposite so ... read more

Saturday February 17, 2017 - Today was a difficult start to a holiday. Work has been busy and stressful. I haven’t had enough time or energy to plan this trip properly. I had a good starting plan, and that seemed like enough. Except it wasn’t. Since I bought these tickets a little late, I decided to buy two separate round-trip tickets to save money - one, Zurich-Milan, the other, Milan-Tunis. It seemed like it couldn’t really go wrong. Swiss is reliable. Usually. I woke up at 5am and left the house before 6am, to start the journey to Zurich airport by train. Once I arrived and looked at the board, I could see it all fall apart. My flight was canceled. I’ve often seen other flights canceled and felt bad, but was more glad it wasn’t ... read more

The excitement is now growing as it is one week before we fly off to ski. Okay, so the picture is wrong but we have never been to Aprica before so it will be a new experience for all. The skis are down from the loft and we are beginning to plan the packing.... read more

The Man in the Middle likes a good lake. He still sings the virtues of the Lake Ohrid trip to Macedonia. The weather helped, as did the price of a potential holiday home. Living the good life - with Elvis as a sailing buddy. He was therefore keen as mustard to sample the delights of Lake Como, when it was thrown into the equation as a possibility for our last day of the Milan trip. The driving rain of Monday and the snow of Sunday had gone and there were better prospects for the weather. It would have been pointless to head north to the lake expecting to see a view in the pouring rain. We were up early, checked out, bags stored and at Porto Garibaldi Station before 9. We interrogated our preferred ticket machine ... read more

The snow of Sunday had turned to heavy rain. We walked swiftly to the metro to keep dry and set sail for Bergamo. Napoleon would have had no bother flooding the Arena Civica today - it was that wet. We were getting to be regulars at Porto Garibaldi railway station and headed upstairs to the main ticket office area, where we knew there were a vast array of train ticket machines to choose from. We bought our single tickets to Bergamo for 5.50 Euros. Despite the slight delay in venturing to the upper area of the station to get the tickets, we still managed to catch the regional express. The train was delayed marginally and the platform inexplicably changed about 2 minutes before departure. The passengers rapidly relocated to avoid disappointment - queue lots of similar ... read more

Monza is synonymous with Formula 1. A mere 12 kilometres from downtown Milan, every summer the masses descend for the Italian Grand Prix. The lure of Lewis Hamilton and an afternoon with ear plugs in wasn't on offer on a cold December morning. The plan for the morning was already in disarray. The local Government offices at the Place of Lombardy let you ascend to the top of their tower for a panoramic view for free. Well, most Sundays they do ..... but not today. A small notice affixed to the door basically said closed because it was a Bank Holiday the previous Friday. We looked skyward. The tower was crossed off the agenda and we walked down to Porta Garibaldi railway station. The whole local area is being developed. Out with old and in with ... read more

I put forward a series of options to the Man in the Middle. As always, there is a wild card. He often likes the wild card. The prospect of a trip to the San Siro loomed. The Queen of the East Midlands is now well used to groups of Italians paying homage. Juventus fans make much of their famous black and white stripes - stripes inspired by and borrowed from the Meadow Lane gang. They even chose the said NG2 residents to play in their centenary match. Champions of Serie A versus a sub standard Football League team - and the cannon fodder guests even had the audacity to pinch a late equaliser. However, the more plentiful recent visitors have been from Milan. A C Milan to be precise. A local Mansfield Road lad left his ... read more

Early morning, left hotel at 8am, trains to Verona very expensive at this time of morning so decided to have breakfast here and get a later train OMG the size of the coffee's thought they were samples didn't realise we were being charged. Arrived in Verona just after 1not a bad train journey, Tonight we're staying in a airb&b, after trying a few wrong doors we finally found the right on, top floor of an apartment block, quite nice and we get the whole place to ourselves, we basically dumped our bags and went exploring, once you get to the centre what a brilliant place after Milan more what I expect from Italy. We had a walk round The Cathedral complex and then went into The Arena Amphitheatre. After a lovely Cannelloni (was nice) we went ... read more

Early start to Manchester airport for flight to Milan, good flight chatting to lots of nice people, one man and his son were on there way there for one night to see the Milan football match. About a 25 minute bus journey into the city and then a 20 minute walk to hotel, literally dumped our bags and went site seeing. Found the Duomo what a beautiful building can never understand how they could build buildings like that all those years ago without the machines we have now and yet today it takes us months to build a big standard house????? Walked round the square there had been a charity run on for cancer so lots of ladies in pink t shirts. Stopped for ..... quess what???? Pizza! Was really nice then just wondered through the ... read more
