Leaving Florence by train through the Tuscany Region and then arriving in our "home" for the next week, Sestri Levante. We were able to walk to our hotel, the Sole e Luna, which was located right at the beach with amazing views from our balcony. For the next five days we'd start out there each morning after a quaint breakfast with "Mama Mia" and travel by train to one of the villages of the region and then spend the day hiking to one or several other villages. For first day of hiking, we took a Train to Levanto and then walked to Monterosso. This is the description from our walking tour notes; "This morning take a train transfer to Levanto and spend some time in the historical centre dating back to the 12th Century. From here, ... read more

well, from St Jean De Monts we headed east, and ended up in a place called parthenay. Stayed in a proper campsite for shower and electric. There wasnt much to do in the town, so had a walk down the river, and that was about it. This is where we first discovered that you can buy French sticks(bread) from a machine. Next day headed east again to Moulins. It was an Aire, but not bad. Some new age travellers (gypos), were on the site but no bother. Nothing much there so we didnt explore much. Next day arrived at an Abbey in Bourge en Bresse. It was the car park for the Abbey, and there was a biathlon event that day. I didnt enter it, or the Abbey, but Fiona did and said it was worth ... read more

The Two Coasts: Venice & Sestri Levante Venice: Lets begin with Venice. Our flight from Copenhagen was quick and painless, very different from our previous journey. Throughout our trip we talked about expectations, and how we wanted to take in each new city with a blank canvas and let our experiences paint the picture. For Venice, we cheated a little bit, because of its enchanting existence as the City of Bridges. Our expectations were definitely correct in terms of external beauty, however, the actual city left much to be desired. We began off the right foot, though, as our quaint bed and breakfast, named Albergo Doni, was located in perhaps the most quintessential alley/canal of Venice. Albergo Doni practically oozed Venice in it’s facaded windows dusted with beautiful hanging flowers, its slightly fade... read more

Ciao peeps. And welcome to what will be my last post for a while. Tomorrow, 303 days after leaving the UK I will arrive back in sunny old Bristol. It has been a good trip and an excellent adventure. In retrospect it has probably been a better trip than the first one. On this trip I had a better understanding what to expect, knew what I would enjoy and planned accordingly. Of course there have been times of difficulty, being so long away from your own culture can be taxing. This is especially true of India (I am still a bit scarred from seven months there, but still want to return). Would I do it all again? Absolutely, in fact I hope to, I just need to knuckle down and earn the cash. Life needs to ... read more

Day 12 Saturday 20 July Caught the early bus to Bolzano and arrived at 10.30. Good trip and the hotel, a bit of an olde world 5star hotel is great and we are upgraded. Sweet! We wait in the attached rear garden while our room is madeup. Great garden as well. We set up in our room at 11 and head off around town. Market day and it is very busy. We do the roll and cheese and ham thing for lunch and it works great. Bolzano or Bozen in the local Ladin language is the capital of the South Tyrol district and is as Austrian as any Austrian town. Very attractive. After checking out the market, the town, the cathedral and a river walk, we headed back to the hotel for a rest . Chris ... read more
