'Today started with another breakfast in the enchanted garden, we made it for 9am to give us an extra half hour to sleep in. It really is a great way to start the day. CINQUE TERRE ON FOOT – THE BLUE TRAIL Afterwards we wandered down to the train station to buy our Cinque Terre Card. The card gives you access to the walking tracks between the five villages. We bought a 2 day pass; there is the option of including the local train which we also took. It means we can walk one way and train back which we figured meant we would be able to go slower and enjoy the experience more. That organised we headed back through the Old Town to the start of the track. We decided to take the Blue Track ... read more

BREAKFAST After a very good night’s sleep we started our day with breakfast in Giardino Incantato's lovely Ligurian garden. It is situated just across the alley from the B&B and the seating is set amongst Lemon and other Mediterranean trees and flowers. The weather was nice and mild so it was a great spot enjoy a quiet breakfast. In Italy they don’t typically have cooked breakfasts, I had a selection of ham, cheeses and breads, Jeanette had fruit, yogurt and cereal. The food was fresh, plentiful and delicious. ANGELO’S BOAT TRIP We were scheduled to take a boat cruise to Portovenere at 11.30pm so we had a wander around the centre of town and the weekly market which had lots of interesting bits and pieces (for Jeanette especially). It was a glorious day so we were ... read more

Today was a very interesting one to say the least, the shackles had been released (in the nicest possible way) from the strict routine required to get 38 people in a coach around 14 countries of Europe in 33 days, and we were on our own! GENOA We still needed our wits about us though as we had to report at Gatwick for our flight to Genoa Italy by 8.30pm (flight left 10.30am). In the end the decision to stay out by Gatwick was a good one as we could get organised, have breakfast and only need to leave the Hotel at around 8ish, although in the end we were a bit before that. Initially everything went smoothly. We checked in, our suitcases only weighed around 17kg each (allowance is 23kg) so questionable if we needed ... read more

Cinque Terre is a magical place. The region is made up small villages wedged between steep cliffs and the ocean. Only one of the towns (Monterosso del Mare) has enough space for a thin strip of beach. Most of the villages are very traditional in architecture and life style. The region was isolated from the general public due to the lack of public transportation until the 1930's. Only one of the villages, Mnarola, is inhabited year round. The rest of the towns are seasonal, April - November. The cuisine in CT is different from the rest of Tuscany. There is a strong emphasis on fish, pesto and the best focaccia you will ever eat! Swimming in the clear sea and hiking the stunning hillside trails is the source of entertainment. The water is so clean and ... read more

Some days are just perfect. We didn't plan much for today, but it all unfolded as though we had mapped it out carefully. We woke up keen to explore, after only getting a glimpse of Monterosso from high up the hill at sunset last night. I threw open the big green shutters on our French doors and couldn't believe how gorgeous the view and the garden was. There were brightly coloured flowers everywhere in the garden, and we were aware of the fragrance of the jasmine before we walked down the path to breakfast and saw it. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I had the best coffee I've had in Italy from a MACHINE at the breakfast buffet! Strong and milky, just how I like it - nothing like the old cafe bars at ... read more

Our trip from London to Milan took us over the Alps on a fairly clear day, so we were able to see Mount Blanc along with countless tiny mountain towns nestled on the edges of beautiful mountain valleys. However, when we arrived in Milan the calm induced by our leisurely glide over the Alps quickly disappeared when we realized that Marianne's bag was missing. After waiting in line for perhaps half an hour, an agent took our baggage tag and being unable to do anything with it except locate our flight number, we were directed to another line and a different agent who was also able to do little except set up a claim to have the bag delivered whenever it was located. To say the least, we were very discomforted by this experience. Naturally, there ... read more

No więc załoga kolejny raz zmieniła skład. Aktualnie przesyłają buziaki i pozdrowienia z włoskiej plaży. Podobno pełnię księżyca też tam mają. Reszta drużyny kwitnie w gipsie i umila sobie czas z Panem Kapuścińskim, który zna Afrykę jak własną kieszeń i fascynująco o niej opowiada. ... read more

After a comfortable train ride through Milan from Venice, we arrived about 5pm yesterday to Monterosso al Mare. I'm loving it here....the fishing village is so much more quaint and laid back then Venice. Our hotel is really comfortable...Hotel Margherita is newly remodeled and modern. We have a great room with a large veranda and lounge chairs. I was a bit worried about the weather as it was cloudy and cold when we got in, but lucklily today turned out to be a big surprise. We found a much better restaurant in our village then the one in Venice, delicious for half the price. Found a great local red wine that I will try to bring home too....rosso something...gotta go back and find out. Warren had grilled scampi, and I had ravioli stuffed with sea bass ... read more

Finished my stay in Firenze (Florence) last Saturday and headed straight to Cinque Terra - about three hours by train, with a change at the La Spezia station to a local train to Monterossa. It was soooo nice getting out of the big city for awhile and into a small town environment with hiking trails, beautiful vistas, few vehicles (and the ones that are here move very slowly and quietly), et al. Cinque Terra - literally, “five lands” -- a region along the Ligurian Sea (northwest) coast consisting of five small towns, originally fishing villages, but now heavily tourist-oriented and each one accessible to the others by train, boat or trail. The trail-walking is the best and ranges from a fairly arduous trek on the north end to a relatively easy stroll between the two most ... read more

We are scheduled to fly back to the US on Monday Mar 22. Today we received an email from Expedia telling us to "call them immediately concerning our flight." After calling, we found out that the first leg of our flight (from Milan to London) had been canceled due to the British Airways strike. After calling Expedia we learned that many of the shorter flights scheduled between Mar 20 and Mar 22 were being canceled however the longer flights were unaffected. So our flight from London to San Francisco was fine - we just didn't have a way to get to London. Per Expedia, we had 2 options - rebook our return trip for April 3rd (!!!!) or book a new Euro flight on a different airline (which we would have to pay for b/c BA ... read more
