After an appx 2 hour train ride from Florence, we arrive in Cinque Terre (pronounced Chink weh Tay reh). The name refers to 5 Villages that hug the rugged coast line as part of the Italian Riviera. Up until about 1990, the area was a relatively obscure tourist destination with a few visitors mainly from France, Germany and other European countries. When Rick Steves, the American travel writer, discovered it, the area became the 4th most popular travel destinations in Italy, behind Rome, Florence and Venice. In the early days prior to the “tourism takeover”, the main attraction in Cinque Terre was the Via Delle Amore, or ”walk of love”. The trail connected two of the villages, Manarola and Riomaggiore and when opened, it dramatically improved relationships between these once isolated communities. Young people, who rarely ... read more

We've come off day 1 of our Cinque Terre adventure pretty unscathed. We visited Riomaggiore and Manarola by boat, and while it's not in Cinque Terre proper, we also visited Porto Venere. We bought a day ticket for the boat, and we got as much out of it as we possibly could. As I mentioned yesterday, half of the seaside trails between towns were closed, so we decided to visit the towns that we could get to by boat, but couldn't get to any other way. We took a boat ride to Riomaggiore with multiple tour groups, primarily of retirees, around 9 AM. We were told the boat would stop at Porto Venere, which is on the way to Cinque Terre, but it did not. So our first stop was the first (and largest) town in ... read more

After a couple of big days hiking, our laundry bag was getting quite full. I ventured out to find a laundramat and brought back breakfast and nice clean clothes even before Rach had gotten out of bed! Now I normally wouldn't start a blog talking about dirty washing however given we are staying 5 floors up, it took quite a bit of courage to hang outside the window and peg clothes to our little clothes line, all the while feeling my vertigo kicking in! We caught the train to Corniglia, the next village along from us here in Vernazza. Corniglia is the only village of the Cinque Terre that doesn't have a wharf. This is because its perched high up on the cliff. Unfortunately, someone didn't tell that to the blokes building the train line and ... read more

Cinque Terre is on the northwestern coast of Italy, five small villages connected by a 12km walking trail. Each village is unique, and the entire area is surrounded by local farmland and protected by the government to maintain this amazing place. We stayed in the first, or southernmost, "terre", Riomaggiore, in a small hostel. The town is seriously tiny and is built into the side of the cliffs. Only two shops to buy food, and they closed from 3-6pm each day. Very "local" here, except for the thousands of tourists who visit each year. Our first evening we just hung around town, walked by the marina and small beach, watched the sunset, met our roommates in the hostel. The next day we spent walking the trail. There are no cars in the towns, the only way ... read more
