The Italian Soccer Championship I've never lived in a city that won a major sports championship, like the Super Bowl or World Series; but I've seen the celebrations on TV. Usually, a there are huge, almost riotous celebrations in the streets all night long. The next day, the city sends people out to clean up; and it's all over. Well, two full weeks before we arrived in Rome, the Rome soccer team won the Italian championship earning them the right to compete for the European championship. Even though their victory was two weeks old, there were still huge, unorganized human parades celebrating in the streets every night. They drank wine, sang Italian soccer fight songs, and waved huge soccer flags. This was so remarkable to Chris and I that we decided to join them. We sang ... read more

Well made it here...believe it or not! To start with, the keyboard here is a little strange so forgive me if some of the things I type do not come off onscreen the way I would like. Let me begin by telling you that I'm in love with this city. Totally, utterly, and completely in love (who needs a guy when you can have Rome?)...and I haven't even been here 24 hours yet! Ever since landing, I feel as though I've been set free!!! In fact, I'm so content that I could cry for joy. Of course having the sun and 70 degree weather helps from the comfort standpoint. K...yesterday...I DID miss my plane, but not exactly because the train was late, although that was almost the case! I arrived at the Leamington Spa station ... read more

Rome was much bigger, louder, faster, and more diverse than I'd expected, but the history oozes into surprising places - ruins at intersections and aquaducts on the skyline - and I knew I hadn't allowed myself enough time. The Forum was my main interest, and I paid for a tour there, and the guide had Mark Antony's "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" monologue memorized and he performed it with passion at the end of the trip and I got chills and he was tipped well.... read more

So when I was around 15 years old, my parents thought it was time to show us our roots. It's always nice to know where you come from. I grew up in a sicilian household in Elizabeth, New Jersey. My brother and I were raised in a 2 family house, we lived upstairs with our parents, my grandparents downstairs. The finished basement complete with a kitchen was reserved for Sunday Dinners of the best Italian homestyle cooking you could ever eat! My grandfather is a tailor, so he would also work out of the basement, his clients would come over and mingle with the family as they got their custom Italian suits fitted. We always had family from Italy come over to visit. My grandparents themselves came over to this country around the late 1950s on ... read more

The following is a journal of pictures that I have compiled from previous trips taken before the days of travelblog and before I was so internet savvy. I have documented most of these past adventures in my personal journal, but I really want to add these memories to my travelblog. They were the first of my big adventures and some of the most memorable times in my life. After graduating from college in 1999, the guys and I starting taking trips that were a little different from our normal beach parties up and down the coast. Instead of looking for where the crowds were headed, we sought out places to escape the madness of the upbeat city and experience the nature that surrounds it. During our school years, we had been on many weekend camping trips ... read more

Rome has always been a place of fascination dating back to my history classes when I was but 7 years old. I did study European history past high school focusing on the rise and fall of colonial powers like the Roman Empire, England etc. Rome's conquests were vast spreading into Africa. In it's regional restlessness and the varying history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands undefeated and a monument to scale and stability. At the peak of it's might, the Roman empire stretched from Syria to Scotland and much of the western world, and for 700 years or more, she ruled vast dominions. With this influence came a history that we now seek in our travels and find but ruins on the ground. Two things take my fancy when I travel to Europe besides the ... read more

There is only one word to describe me at this exact moment. EXHAUSTED. I am so thoroughly worn out from today it's not even funny. Allow me to tell you why... My end to yesterday was no breeze by far. After stopping by this café to write yesterday, I decided to walk down to the Wedding Cake and then went to the Colloseum. Both were/are spectacular. The Colloseum absolutely astounded me. I really don't know what I expected...I thought it would be a little bigger (clearly I've watched Gladiator too many times) but what I really found amazing was just to stand there looking at it and imagining it in its former glory...and the sounds of the crowd and the smells and to think of all that took place right there where I was standing. ... read more
