Buon Giorno
While my wonderful Italian thanksgiving is the main focus of this entry, of course I must add in other events as well.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights are students nights here in Viterbo. I think it is ridiculous that they chose Tuesday and Wednesday nights, I mean I still have to wake up at 8am the next morning. Anyway I finally sucked it up and went out on a Tuesday night. We went to Raverse with some of our Italian friends, the only place to dance here. People don’t usually go out until 12 so I thought it was silly that we got there at 10:30, but it was nice to just chill and talk and drink a little with our friends. When people finally started showing up we got up and danced. It was a lot of fun, very different from clubs in America but I think I liked it better, I was able to dance with my friends without too many creepers interfering. Then at one point, our friends put our names down on a list, but we weren’t sure for what. About 30 minutes later the dance floor cleared and they announced they were having
a beauty padgent. Katie tried to run away, I thought about it too. But we stayed. They called each of our friends up, then me. They asked where I was from, if I liked girls or guys and what my favorite movie is, I answered “Harry Potter”. Then they called some guys up. One guy and one of our friends won, it was so funny and random. Katie and our friends left and I wanted to leave to but I felt obligated to stay because my roommate had just goton there after I told her to come. So we hung out for a while then I snuck out after 40 min.
Ok now we can jump to Thanksgiving. Leading up to it, I was getting frustrated because no one understood how important this holiday is. Of course I don’t agree with the history of this holiday but cooking all day, eating great food and being with family and or friends is so important. Anyway, non of my roommates understood, they didn’t understand why we spent so much money to prepare for the meal, and they weren’t willing to eat at a normal thanksgiving eating time. So it was hard
to get excited about preparing a meal for people who didn’t even care. So on Thursday we went to class, then bought the chickens. Katie and I went to a Macelleria (Butcher shop), keep in mind she is a vegiterian and I don’t eat much meat. We bought too chickens because turkey is too expensive here. We came home and the Americans dominated the kitchen. Ace prepaired the chickens while Alessandro was playing with them. Katie, Ace and I worked on the stuffing together. While the chicken was in, Katie and I went on a run, or a “turkey run” as they say in her town. We ran past our friends apartment and she threw down some brown sugar from her balcony, also at my house I threw down some baking powder to some friends from my balcony, so cool. Then Katie and I collected some pretty leaves and grapes to decorate. We finally got started on the rest of the meal, I was in charge of pies, I made pumpkin and apple. I also made baked fennel root with breadcrumbs and parsley as well as green beans. Katie made sweet potatoes stuffed inside of orange peel halves and mashed
potatoes. We were planning on eating at 7 but somehow Daniele stalled it to 7:45. We all went around the table and said what we were grateful for, it was really sweet. Then we dove into the food. I was so full after 10 minutes, how thanksgiving should be of course. After dinner we played inappropriate games, danced and sang along with music videos. It turned out to be a wonderful night. I missed having thanksgiving with my family up in Sebastopol and then my mom and Michael. It is the one time each year that I get to see that part of my family and I missed it. But even though I was away from family, Katie and my roommates have become a part of my family, my family away from home and I truly love them. This is what I gave thanks for.
The next day, Katie and I went to Rome again. She wanted to go to Vatican City. We went inside the Basilica di San Pietro and saw all of the Popes tombs. Then Katie went to the Vatican and I walked around by myself. I found an international market that has everything, Mexican food,
Thai, Japanese, they had nori and soy sauce and even Quinoa. Then I went to a café and knitted for a while, then walked around some more. Katie and I met up again and we crossed the river in Rome and walked down random streets. We found our favorite street. There were at least three vintage stores; I miss vintage stores so much. They had boots, purses, long coats, and some had fancy dresses. My mom and Melissa would have especially loved them. We walked into other fancy shops on the same street and into this one fancy one of a kind designer store. Everything was a hand made art piece; there were beautiful wedding dresses too. It was so lovely to walk around Rome; I especially love walking around at evening or night on these brisk autumn nights.
So, I think that’s it for now, I’ve just been knitting a lot of hats and teaching people how to knit. The other night one of the American guys was playing his acoustic guitar at one of the bars, so we went to watch, it was cozy and mellow, nice for a freezing night.
Ciao ciao, baci baci
