Our first day in Rome and unfortunately I woke up feeling like I was coming down with a cold. It was also very warm for lateish Autumn, around 30 degrees, which wasn't the most comfortable, especially not feeling very well. This actually made me think that I didn't much like Rome, but by the end of our stay I had turned around.
We did a massive walk for most of the day, visited Campo dei Fiori, which had a market to browse and Piazza Navona with its beautiful fountains. We also had a look at the cats in Largo di Torro Argentina, as well as the ruins that they are uncovering there. Amazing to think that this was where Caesar was killed.
Next was the massive Vittorio Emanuele monument with its incredible views across Rome. We then headed towards the Trevi Fountain, which was unfortunately under renovation and ended up at the Spanish Steps. We were hoping for lunch in this area, and G was craving pizza. There was a complete dearth of restaurants in the Spanish Steps vicinity, we finally found a lovely one named Ciampini a short walk from the top of the steps.

Largo di Torre Argentina, Rome, 15-10-14 They had a great pizza menu, but once we sat down we discovered that pizza was only available in the evenings. We left and continue to find something else as G really, really wanted pizza. Eventually we found a little casual pizza place in a narrow street and sat out to eat lunch al fresco. Very basic place but really good pizza, with as usual a glass of wine.
We then headed back to our hotel and spent some time exploring the Pantheon before heading to the hotel's rooftop bar for a predinner drink. Lovely views, even the Vatican in the distance at sunset, but we preferred sitting in privacy on our balcony with the amazing people watching.
We had made reservations for 8.30 at Roscioli for dinner so caught a cab there. Unfortunately we found that I had made an error with my online reservation and actually booked for 10.30!! We love to eat late but that was a bridge too far and they were absolutely packed, so no hope of an earlier table. We decided to head back to Campo dei Fiori where there were heaps of places to eat. Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument
Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument, Rome, 15-10-14 their menu appealed. Had some garlic and cheese bread to start, followed by a great steak with red wine sauce and mash. Amazing to watch the waiters expertly fillet a whole fish with just a fork for the table next to us.
All in all we had a great day, considering that I wasn't well and the mix up with dinner.
