Car Crunch
This was just before the illegal vendor incident. Most of the photos in this entry are from Sally’s amazing little camera. I think I’m busy navigating and don’t get out the camera, so Sally’s been the trip recorder. This days entry is kind a catch up on photos. I spent the morning reading in St. Peter’s Square while Sally went to see the Sistine Chapel. She looked like she’d just survived a tornado when she came out. I guess it is overwhelming, both the crowds and the art.
Sally has been commenting that the cars seem to maneuver the incredibly small streets without having a lot of accidents. Then we began noticing how many cars have scrapes on their fenders and doors. She also was missing all the shouting and honking she’d heard about that the Italians are reputed to engage in. I told her, she hadn’t been to Rome yet. Well, we’re in Rome and, sure enough, we’re getting a taste of the more raucous southern spirit. Yesterday we saw 2 accidents, not as they happened, but afterward. One was a string of about 5 cars that had side swiped and rear-ended each other. We witnessed the vigili (cops) chasing a group of street
Scarf Seller in Sirmione
This is way back on Lake Guarda when we bought the scarves. venders away from the Castelo Sant’ Angelo. I guess they needed a permit and didn’t have one. It was actually quite scary to be standing quietly looking out over the Tiber and suddenly hear the sound of many feet hitting the pavement and coming your way. They ran past with all bulky hand bags and boards of sunglasses and other wares flapping against their sides. One of them even banged into Sally. It makes you realize how fast things can happen. The previous day, we saw a milder version of this with the carribinieri (another kind of police officer) making a violin player leave the Trevi Fountain.
Today we're going out to visit a monster garden.
