June 17th: Today Grace, Chelsea and I all signed up for housing in Troy. It is a very similar situation to Orchard Trails in Orono only its graduate housing. We each get our own bathrooms. These girls are great and are getting excited to move to New York!
Today was also the first free day we have had since we have been here. We decided to travel to Pisa. We took a 3.5 hour train there. We got scammed at the terminal. Our tickets weren’t printing and a nice man asked if he could help. We brought us to the terminal and one of the girls in the group gave him a few euros. The man replied. “This is all I get for helping 5 of you!” I couldn’t believe that he said that. We thought that he worked there but that was not the case. The train ride was full of laughter and stories and it was great to get to know Grace and Chelsea a little better.
At the train station they had a McDonalds. Obviously I had to stop. The Big Macs here don’t taste much different. We took a taxi to the beach. There was
some sand. Mostly it was large rocks which were very hard to navigate through. I got to swim in the ocean!
Our next adventure was to go back to Pisa to visit the leaning tower of Pisa. We spend hours there just laying on the lawn and taking ridiculous photos. We had our first three course meal! The food here is wonderful. I had a cream chicken and seafood pasta YUMMY!!!!
The rest of the night we roamed around the city of Pisa. We stumbled upon a boxing match. The stage was set up right in the middle of a bridge. We finally left to head back on our train that was leaving at 1:43am. This was the only bad part of the trip. Everyone had taken up all the “harry potter carts” so we had to sit in the hallway. We had old men staring at us the entire 3 hour drive and inching toward us. I was texting Brian the whole time because I was honestly scared. Luckily we ran off the bus and rushed home and everyone was okay. Lessened learned! No more night trains.
June 18th- Today was just a lazy day and
I got caught up on my studies. I did get to Skype in on Jen’s Baby Shower. It was great to see all the family. Lots of Laughs! We ended the night with a wine and cheese party with the rest of the ISP group and roamed around Rome!
Some random notes: Italians really like to recycle. They have different color bags for everything. It’s really confusing when trying to trough trash away. Also it is very important to wear comfortable shoes. These cobble stones are killing me!! There is also a lot of graffiti in the city. We were told it’s not gang related and the Italians just like to express themselves with the art of spray paint.
