ROMA Day 54
This morning I woke up super excited to meet up with my new friend Rob. We headed first to the Colosseo and Palentine Hill. As we walked towards the ancient ruins there are all these regular city type buildings and then WHAM there are these ancient sites straight out of history and I literally had to stop for a moment to gather myself. It was as though my brain couldn’t register that my eyes were really seeing it.
We went into Palentine Hill first, which is the old city area with the different homes and buildings from ancient Rome. As we walked around laughing and joking we were stopped because there was some filming occurring for some Italian movie. I asked what movie it was but all I go in reply was “blahblahblah blahhh bla bla” (set to the rhythmic singing sound of Italian).I was going to ask again but I didn’t think there would be much point. So we finally started walking again and stopped for some photos and again became so engrossed in our conversation that I nearly clothes-lined myself on this chain that blocked off an area of the remains. We both
started to laugh so hard just imagining us both tumbling down backwards from the slope we just walked up.
Once we composed our selves we began walking back when we came across the ‘safe sex’ lady. Ok, so this woman was walking around with a bag that was all blue and then in big white writing it said SAFE SEX. Now, we couldn’t decide if maybe she didn’t know English and therefore had no idea what the bag said or she was some sort of sexuality lecturer. Either way it was super funny to see. We followed her a bit but couldn’t get close enough to hear what language she was speaking. At one point, when we were still stalking the safe sex lady, we came across some very cute lizards. Overall, I really enjoyed Palentine Hill. The sites are beautiful and the company was grand! (miss u rob!) After the Hill we went to the Colosseo.
We decided to get the audio guide for the Colosseo but it was sort of boring and repetitive. The Colosseo is definitely more interesting to see from the outside. The inside is ok but the awe value is definitely in the
exterior. From the inside you do get a very nice view of the surrounding area and the Constantine Arch. After all the walking around the ruins for hours and hours we headed for lunch, pizza for me and pasta for Rob.
After our lunch we headed for the Trevi fountain, which is stunning. We each tossed in our two coins: 1 to return and 1 for a wish. Every time Rob took a picture of me tossing my coins (and then pretend tossing) I always seemed to look like a goofball but it is funnier that way. I could have stayed all day looking at the fountain but it is a really popular spot and so there were many people so we headed on to the Spanish steps.
Here we basked in the sun for a while before we headed back towards our respective hostels for some relax and grub. On the way back to the hostels we passed a fountain that had a wolf/wild dog and 2 small children sitting underneath it suckling from its teat. I found this to be a very strange fountain. Rob and I parted ways with plans to meet back up after
After dinner Rob and I headed to a little resto/café for some tea for me and wine for he. The music was really good and it was a nice atmosphere. Rob’s American roommates met us there. They were two nice girls but ohhhh so very American. The one girl said to me ‘so in Canada you have the Euro right?’ I laughed on the inside for a very long time but politely informed her that we have the Canadian dollar which is actually practically at parity with the American dollar at the moment. LOL the EURO! I should have told her that ‘ yes, we do have the euro but they are minted inside Igloos and made out of ice so we cant take it across the border or it will melt away into nothing’. The best part is that it’s not like they are from far south in the states they were from New York! Highly entertaining. After a couple hours I was pretty tired so we headed back to the hostels and I parted ways with Rob (sad face).
