Back in Rome for a couple days before our jaunt to the island of Sicily, Lucy and I mainly take things easy. We have dinner with Jennifer, we have dinner with Haley, we plan for Sicily, and we basically just relax. Very soothing.
One note on our dinner with Haley: we realise that this is the last time we'll see the girl on this continent, so we decide to indulge a whimsy. She'd expressed interest in one of the items for sale by ubiquitous street vendors (very close in spirit to the
chicle kids in Mexico), a duck with a long neck that waves back and forth as it's internal speaker plays a children's song. Our group had subjected her to the social crucible of mocking necessary when you see on of your friend doing or saying something simply ridiculous, but she stayed true to her desires and unswayed by our lambasting. So, on our final night together, Lucy and I bought the yellow, phallic thing for her. In hindsight, I probably should have l Lucy do the bargaining, as I folded at euro7, while Lucy is convinced to this day that she could've talked the man down to 6, and we had agreed beforehand to pay no more than 5. Even through my sense of being slightly ripped off, I had to admire the artistry and strong will of the man who took us for two euros. Probably more than that; the damn dicky duck couldn't have cost more than a euro or two to manufacture and ship over. My terrible negotiation skills aside, Haley loved the toy, and making friends happy is worth much more than 7 euros, or even 10. I believe the accepted value for a friends happiness is 15 euros. So we made out pretty well.
On to Sicily!
