After a lovely day in Todi we ended up on the shores of Lake Bolsena. Lake Bolsena lies in the Lazio region of Italy . The lake is an extinct volcanic crater. The last time we saw Bolsena was from the air when we travelled from Manchester to Rome.
Bolsena looked a pretty town and if we had time we intended to visit later in the day.
We stayed at Camping Blu which sits right on the lake. It looked a bit shabby on entering. Strange how first opinions stick with you when it comes to camping sites. Reception was across the field in an area on its own. The staff were friendly and directed us across the road where we were told to pick our own parking spot and to return to them with our plot number. There were the usual bungalows on the campground and they seemed fairly full with visitors many of whom were swimming in the neat and tidy swimming pool. I had every intention of having a swim until it started to rain and I gave up. The small campsite shop was a bit threadbare. Perhaps it was the end of the season and
they had sold most of their stock and were not going to bother restocking until the new season of 2013. They had little fresh food but stocked up on dishwasher tablets. I wondered how many campers actually had a dishwasher in their unit and needed tablets. None I suspect. It is strange how many of the campsites abroad do not open until the middle or end of May and the bulk of their entertainment and facilities are only open through the peak months of July and August. They even close mid September. The plots in Camping Blu were quite large and spacious but a touch scruffy . There were the usual trees giving casual shade. There was evidence of flooding again and part of the field was out of bounds to campers. There was no entertainment on the campsite in the form of a restaurant or cafe/bar. The showers were dirty with mud on the floors. It looked as if everyone had gone in with dirty feet and muddy boots and no-one had bothered cleaning up after them. A good thing about Caravan Club sites back home is the cleanliness of the showers. Buckets of disinfectant and a mop are left for you to use after you have showered. At least you clean up your mess after you and leave a nice clean shower for the next person who wishes to use it . Perhaps this is a lesson that should be practiced in some of our Italian shower cubicles and campsites.
We didn’t get to walk into Bolsena but did get down to the lake which looked beautiful next morning in the sunshine. The beach life guards or at least someone local was raking the sand in readiness for the days activities . Rubbish was being collected and more grey earthy sand put down. Another day, another campsite and yet another experience to savour and remember.
