We (Kathy and Kit) arrived in Venice Wednesday evening after delayed and rerouted flight, lugging 50 lb bike cases on and off of two trains, a vaporetto ride up the Grand Canal in the twilight, and a short walk through the cobblestone streets of the Mercato Rialto to our small pension. The whole trip from home to our fourth floor (calculated the American way) walkup room consumed over 24 hours, only one or two of which involved any sleep. The plan was to relax for a day, start to get over jet lag, and enjoy the Venice show without any exertion. And so we skipped the Guggenheim and Leonardo museums, strolled aimlessly in our San Polo neighborhood near the Rialto Bridge, and rode the vaporettos (vaporetti?) to San Marco Plaza and out to the Lido, which ... read more

I have visited, and written about Venice before. I will only say that sitting in the Piazza San Marco and drinking limoncello and perhaps having an ice cream sundae while the orchestras play is one of the favorite activities in my life. I have visited, and written about, Trieste before, so I will say little here. But I have always thought of Trieste as an exotic destination. Perhaps it came from the 1956 National Geographic story. Or perhaps conflation with the deep-diving bathysphere of the same name. But it has seemed a far-flung outpost. I like visiting there. It has monumental buildings right on the sea, and our hotel this time was on the square (Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia) that has been called the most lovely square facing the sea in Europe, and certainly the largest. Our ... read more

My knee seems fine Hallelujah . It hurts but not enough to put me out of business. So it’s a saying that comes to mind again. Ripping todays thought of the day off the calendar Thich Nhat Hahn said “Waking up this morning I smile. Twenty four brand new hours before me. I vow to live it fully in each moment . Bad knee and bruising or not – it’s Miramare or bust. Glenn has always wanted to see this castle but never quite made it. It is not the easiest in a motorhome to get to so we knew we needed the bus/buses. We managed to purchase a ticket from Sistiana Camping Mare Pinea to the nearest stop to the castle . This still meant a 20 minute walk for Hopalong Cassidy. I had to ... read more

Let's start with Friday. My super inconvenient day of school happened (just kidding-I only work from 8-10:40 on Fridays). We celebrated Farsang on Friday, which is basically Carnival for Hungary. My kids all dressed up in costumes like Halloween. Except in Hungary, Halloween means scary costumes and Farsang means silly/cool costumes. Therefore my kids ranged from Flamenco dancer to football player to Zorro to Superman to Fairy to Trash can to Jungle. I wish I could post pictures. Sorry. After school I rushed home, packed my bag, met Kenzie downstairs with her bag, and headed to Arriba Taqueria: The Budapest Mexican Food. There we met Darcy and Alicia. Then Cindy showed up with her CAR and we all piled in. Since I was the navigator (as per usual), I got to sit in the front. YAY. ... read more

Today was Trieste day. We woke up early having had a bad night. The sounds of the local disco in Sistiana had wafted up from the harbour and disturbed us giving us a fitful night of sleep. Have come to the conclusion with campsites that some you win and some you lose. This one has everything but the boom boom reverberating from the harbour really took the shine off it. Our next door neighbours with child left having got fed up of the music and we moved to another plot further away in the hope of losing the noise. We had to sacrifice our sea view which was painful but we really did not feel inclined to listen to another night of disco music. We chose not to try the internet today as the cost of ... read more

Triesting Times Three Countries In One Day The amazing hospitality being shown us in Croatia continues. Sanja’s brother, Miki, and his girlfriend, Doris take a day off to take us to Trieste in Italy. This involves travelling from Croatia, through a corner of Slovenia, and into Italy. There are good quality roads all the way. There has been a lot of road building in recent years but there’s also a lot of toll stations to pass through to help pay for it. Miki is also very careful to keep to the speed limits in Slovenia – both him and Sanja have told us that the Slovenian police hand out large instant fines for anyone caught speeding. Miki is clearly on a different career path to Sanja. He is an expert at finding his way to Trieste ... read more

On my way to Trieste I had to change train at Bologna. In the waiting room I saw a big memorystone with a list of 85 names and ages 3 years old up til 81, victims of an act of terror at Bologna station on August 2nd in 1980. Terror is of all times but as long as we dont ask from our governments 100% security we will always be able to survive. They were busy in the waitingroom preparing probably a tv programm by interviewing people and filming the memorystone. The makers of the programm were all younger than born in 1980. On the stations in Italy you see a lot of police and every now and than soldiers on patrol. Even inside the trains on the mainlines you see every now and than police walking ... read more

In 1956, National Geographic published an article on Trieste, depicting it as a cultural melting pot of the surrounding influences - Slovenian, Croatian, and Italian. Somehow that article caught my attention, and I have always wanted to go to Trieste. I finally got my chance on this trip. Jan, Jennie, and I flew into Venice and took a water taxi to the train station. Checking on our train departure, we discovered that a train was leaving in a few minutes, about 2-1/2 hours ahead of our scheduled departure, so we hopped on board. Actually, given the amount of luggage, the term “hopped” sounds much more sprightly than the situation warrants. The train journey took us along the coast, past marble quarries and Prosecco of the fruity sparkling wines, into Trieste. We met up with Alan and ... read more
