As usual we woke early before anyone else on the site woke. We have not got into sleeping late yet.We prefer to get up make a cup of tea or coffee, have breakfast slowly and then move on.
Our next destination in the footsteps of Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia in the castle Estense in Ferrar. We parked up on a huge car park near to the city walls. It was guesswork trying to work out if you paid or if it was free parking. We found the white parking spaces which usually are free but we overhung the box with Suzy . However we were not too worried as others were doing the same and upon speaking to them they assured us the parking was indeed free. From the car park we had a half mile walk in the stifling heat which did little good to my swollen ankles and Glenns zanzara (Mosquito) bites. They usually attack him quite badly but this year they seem much worse than usual looking like gigantic mountains.
The castle is very similar to Mantova although the moat did seem much cleaner mainly due to the many fountains dotted within it. The movement of
these fountains obviously kept the water cleaner and less murky. The castle again had fantastic ceilings although not in the same league as Mantova. This time though we were able to take photographs. We climbed the tower which had fantastic views over the townscape. The castle itself although grand did not have the same grandeur as its neighbour Mantova. Much of its wall decorations had been removed or destroyedwhich was such a shame.
On our way back we stopped a street cafe to enjoy a concoction that was part ice cream, part ice, part smoothie, part cream and with strawberries on top. 11 euros. It came with three small cakes. A cornet filled with creamy yellow custard and two small iced buns filled with custard and a shot of water to wash them down with.I wonder if they gave you these to tempt you inside the shop to buy more of these little delicacies.
On our way again and a short hop along the motorway Toll just 3 euros. The next motorway toll was 13 euros 40 . I realised it was awkward to get the tickets from the toll machines. The slot to pick the ticket out
of or put money into is either at car height which is too low for the motorhome or at lorry height which is too high. I found myself hanging for grim life out of the window trying to reach buttons or put money in. In the last one I had to leave a few euros in the basket as I couldn’t reach them. I hate unmanned toll booths.
Weather now picking up with the sun shining and a tan developing. If it carries on like this I shall be very brown by the time I reach home again. It must be a first for us to have a run of good weather on holiday. Most of the time the weather back home is better and they have a heat wave whilst we freeze on the continent .............but this time the reverse seems to be happening and it is cold and rainy at home and we are sweltering.
We love Italy and are not sorry that the strike forced us out of Lake Garda as this area is very beautiful and worth a visit.
Next stop a little known Italian town Acquilea.
