Have you ever read the book Eleanor Oliphant is fine? I had never until this holiday and I made it my holiday read. What a clever book it is too. It made me laugh. I sighed a lot as what she said and thought resonated with me. At times she said what I often wished I would be able to say. So as we sat in the restaurant at Camping Citte Bologna her authors ideas came into my head. The waiter smelled awful. I wondered when was the last time he put a fresh clean shirt on? Did he ever wash? I swear he was the same waiter as the last time we were here two years ago and yes he probably was wearing the same clothes . So what does that say about the kitchen? I handled the menu carefully looking for evidence that should not have been there . Nothing - it was clean as a new pin. The choice wasnt wonderful but I found a rather nice pasta dish filled with cheese. That will do nicely. Glenn chose Roast Beef and some rosemary coated potatoes . We decided to wash it down with a red . A bit
tacky but perfectly OK. It did not taste like last weeks dishwater. We chose water and bread and waited . Service was surly but the food to be fair was good. Perhaps my Eleanor Oliphant moment was not necessary. How about pudding? You should always finish off with a nice pudding . We did not in the end . We gave up and settled for two espressos. At the side of us were a German couple . They ordered the same potatoes as us , the same wine and bread but both had a very expensive steak dish. They munched part way through it and then called the waiter over . The steak was too raw for their taste. They refused to eat it or pay what the portion they had obviously enjoyed before complaining. Never thought any more about them .
Payment due we walked over to pay. Two limoncellos were put in front of us . That's nice we thought . The bill came to 46 euros . Just a little twinge came to me . That seemed rather expensive without a pudding. I paid and walked off chuntering to myself . That's not right . What's
not right ? The price . Its too much . I started to look at the bill . The bread was there. the water and the wine and even the potatoes . But the meal itself looked wrong. No pasta , no roast beef . Just two very expensive meals . Yes the brain kicked into gear . We had been charged for the Germans meal rather than our own. I walked back and to my surprise the waiter was waiting for me at the door with 9 euros 50 in his hand and another bill. Alls well that ends well.
So what brought us to the same spot at Camping Citte Bologna as two years ago? We were driving aimlessly with little plans coming to mind. It was getting cooler up North and we had to get round Bologna. Two years ago we were in Suzy . We met the couple opposite with their Globecar - fell in love with it and bought Gabby. It felt a rather surreal experience . We thought about Suzy and wondered where she was. We pondered on what we still liked about Suzy and what we missed . Not the microwave nor the oven. They rarely got used. Nor did we enjoy making up the bed every night . Admittedly there was slightly more room in her but Gabby still wins hands down in our book.
The prices had gone down at campsite to more realistic ones this week so it made sense to stop here overnight . We know the showers are serviceable albeit a little outdated now and in need of an update. We never saw a prostitute on her white chair which seemed very odd . Where to go next ? That is the question. Somewhere on Lake Garda sounds nice . You cannot go wrong with Lake Garda whatever the time of year or the weather . What is there not to like on this most beautiful of Italian lakes ?
