Rome to Naples to Pompeii and Sorrento
We finished our stay in Rome with an early breakfast at our Rome hotel Capo Africa. Great location and very nice…Our tour company had a driver for us and quick ride to the train terminal. We of course got on the wrong train to Naples but made it there successfully. We met our Naples driver and he got us to Pompeii for the tour of the city buried in ash from the volcano Vesuvius. The city itself was buried in 30’ of ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on August of 79 A.D. The citizens that could escape the ash cloud and poisonous gas died in their homes when the roofs collapsed. Once they discovered the buried city in the 1700’s, the ash was removed the city and its treasures were discovered. You could spend many days there looking at the city; it is spread out over four square miles. We took the two hour guided tour and saw the highlights. We have included several pictures of the discovered items including plaster casts of citizens got in the ash and gas. We also have attached a picture of
the dog still on a chain when the volcano erupted. We finished our tour of Pompeii with a tour of the brothel and bath area and several photos of the sites.
Our driver was waiting for us and off we headed to Sorrento. We traveled up the mountains and through the mountain until coming out on the south side facing the beautiful Mediterranean Sea and the bay of Naples. We drove through the city of the Sorrento and headed out of town a short distance until we reached the hotel Minerva. What a hotel, built into the side of the mountain, every room has a balcony and ocean view! We have included several photos of the hotel and the view the bay of Sorrento. We got unpacked, headed up to the pool for a quick swim and lunch. Get ready to head down to the city for supper. We made the 10 minute walk down the narrow sidewalk with cars, buses, and scooters coming from both directions. Once we arrived at the beach we were greeted with a lovely wedding at the church and next to the outdoor restaurant. We got a great table and ordered the
specials, fried fish plate, sea bass, and gnocchi with clams. The gnocchi and sea bass were good but the fried fish plate was not very good. Very brave on Dan and Jane’s part to give it a try. We took our time and then headed out to pursue the perfect gelato. Our driver gave us the name of Primerva gelato and we found it the stand, excellent! Downtown Sorrento was bustling with children riding bicycles, young people out and about. A very festive atmosphere and many narrow streets with outdoor restaurants at every corner. You feel like you are in a movie…like Sherry said at supper tonight, you feel like you are in a different country!!
We made our way back to the hotel and called it a night. Looks like we are off to Capri in the morning and one more beautiful night in Sorrento until we head to Florence on Monday.
