yum
yum Today was my day dedicated to discovering the not so wonderful but certainly interesting city of Naples. Figured I would enjoy this more than a day trip out to Vesuvius or Pompeii. The receptionist at the hostel here hooked me up with a map and after drawing all over it I had a pretty good idea of what to check out and where to grab pizza. Something you have to do here as it supposedly was invented and perfected in Napoli. Really did enjoy walking around the historic centre here. The place is a bit run down but it's cool to see these tiny alleys with people selling all their goods and then right around the corner is a nice quaint church or an old decaying statue. It's crazy to walk around here since they have no concept of pedestrian streets. There are streets that should be pedestrian and no other city would ever allow cars to go down but not here. Even in these tiny alleys scooters and vespas zip by you and even the odd car tries to as well. Watched today as some fool in his brand new BMW tried to navigate his way down one such alley
with his side mirrors mere inches from the walls.
I heard Naples is kind of like NYC and I see the resemblances. Its pretty dirty, the people are unique, love it or hate it city, known for its pizza, crazy drivers, full of Italians, etc, etc. Had lunch at one of the famous pizzerias (Pizzeria da Michele). The place has been around for 140 years and still only serves two types of pizza, Margharita and Marinara. You walk in the place and they immediately point you to where to sit. Usually the table already has people at it so you say a polite hi and wait to order. Just glad I didn't end up at a 2 person table with a random. Would have been like an awkward date. The pizza was pretty damn good but I'm not stopping here. Going to try another place out later. Apparently this place is pretty popular since when I walked out there was a mob of people with numbers waiting to be called in to be seated.
Enjoyed an afternoon of wandering around the city streets and made it up to the old castle as well for a view out over
the bay. It's like a completely different world up there, far from Naples. Can see the colorful houses in neighborhoods ducking down the water and the mountains out across the bay in the background. One of which may or may not be Mt. Vesuvius. Was pretty beat after a full day of exploring so I headed back to the hostel and met up with a group of Brits and Scots in my room before heading out to dinner with them. Went to another popular pizza place (Sorbillo?) This place was equally popular and the pizza was even better. It may have been the best pie I've ever had to be honest. Had a pizza with spicy salami, onions and basil and wow it was good. We all just sat in silence enjoying our pizza just like with the gelatto in Florence. It ended up pouring that evening so we just sat in the hostel lounge with some other travelers playing cards and watching The Big Lebowski. Pretty good day in Napoli and the pizza absolutely lived up my expectations.
