The Amalfi Coast is one of those places in Italy, like Cinque Terre, that I have always heard people raving about. Rather than taking the winding mountain side road through the town of Amalfi to Positano, I took a ferry straight from Salerno. As we approached the porto at the base of the hillside town, I immediately understood what all the buzz was about. The town was stunning. And continuing with my south Italian theme, there was pretty much nothing to do but eat, go to the beaches and relax. My activity for the day was to hop on this little boat that takes people to a restaurant up the coast called Da Adolfo that is only accessible via the water. They have a small beach in front of the open air restaurant, where I relaxed ... read more

Sometimes things just work out well without planning. Being in Italy for the World Cup final while Italy playing was once such time. After the debacle that saw Italy knock Australia out of the tournament (dubious refereeing, but I won’t harp) I didn’t think I’d support the Azzuri; in fact I started out the match with a distinct pro-French feeling, though this was silently acknowledged only to myself! Amalfi beach started filling up about an hour before the game started. There was a big screen at one end of the beach, green tarpaulins draped on either side in an attempt to block out some of the glare of the setting sun. The dons of the beach chair rental let the crowds take their beach lounges for free and so we reclined in style on the beach ... read more

Happy birthday Cathy! This was the theme of my weekend in Amalfi. Planned months ago, the 30th of Squeezy was always going to be celebrated in style. The thunder and lightning that welcomed me didn’t start the weekend as planned, nor did the one and a half hour late bus to the train station, the two cancelled trains to Salerno and the just-missed bus to Amalfi. Fifteen and a half hours later I made it. We should have picked Bangkok; it probably would have been quicker! My mood was quickly reversed when I saw Cathy and Co. (Aideen and Antonio) and the enormous and tasty pasta, salad, bread, olives and cake meal that Cath had prepared for my arrival. Despite tiredness from a long day of travel I made it out for a wander and gelati ... read more

An Amazing private boat ride with a lovely Italian family to the Amalfi Coast. After the ride a tasty desert, pizza, and gelato for everyone. What a day! The Amalfi Coast, or Costiera Amalfitana in Italian, is a stretch of coastline on the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula of Italy (Province of Salerno). Renowned for its rugged terrain, scenic beauty, picturesque towns and diversity, the Amalfi Coast is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.... read more

Hi Everybody! Well, Its been a very eventful few days! I picked up Holly in Rome and we immediately headed for the Amalfi Coast. I have to say, its beautiful. Our first stop was the Conca Azzurra which was located between Amalfi and Positano. A very weird, but very interesting place. It was beautiful, but tiny. We were on a cliff, and we had private access to the Mediterranean, which is VERY precious in this part of the world. We spent the first night in Amalfi, having Dinner and touring St. Andrews Cathedral. Did you know that St. Andrew was buried in Amalfi?? We didnt! He was a fascinating character, the first apostle of Jesus Christ. He traveled all the way to modern Russia, preaching the gospel. He ended up being crucified, (a shame!) but as ... read more

Il Paradiso Minori is a small village filled mainly with locals and not too many tourists. This was great for us as we became part of the community very quickly. The fruit and veg shop, the butcher, the baker, the entoca(wine shop) all became our friends as we shopped daily for our needs. Every day we would hit the beach for a few hours and swim in the crystal clear Mediterranean. The kids had a ball on some kayaks while Mark would do his gelati swim a lap across and back of the bay front, once finished he felt he deserved a gelati. The beach was about 500m long. We never needed a watch because the church bells went off every 15 minutes which we really loved. Mark and I found another wonderful pasticceria where we ... read more

We had decided to head across to Sicily for a week as we had heard it was an interesting place. On our way to the ferry we stopped at Palmi, another coastal village. My grandmother used to go there for her holidays from Plati. It was a beautiful spot but the town was very busy! We were a little sad leaving Calabria as we felt we should have spent longer there. Sicily was a new adventure…in more ways than we thought. We arrived in Messina just after lunch and had planned to head down the east coast towards Taomina and Siracusa. We drove along the coast disappointed at the beaches and towns we went through. Taomina was very busy and situated on top of a very high hill. We drove briefly through and decided it was ... read more

“Oh my God, it’s a dam slalom course!” Franchesca swore, as we wound our little Ford up the back side of the mountain. She then mumbled a new mantra “I hate you” meaning me, under her breath. I smiled and bit my lip, trying hard to keep my always miss understood nervous laughter in check. I sunk lower in my seat, deciding it was best not to tell her what lay ahead. This was the really easy part. Once we got over the mountain the training wheels would have to come off. Having been to Positano before, I had knowingly risked our friendship and quite possibly our lives for one of the most dangerous, but beautiful drives on earth. As we exited the tunnel at the crest of the mountain, the deep blue of the Med ... read more

Hi Guys, Well I have finally made it and I am in Italy. I flew into Naples Sunday and caught the bus direct to Sorrento. Sorrento is nice, but a rather large city, something I have been dying to get away from! So after a night in a WET tent in Sorrento I am now in Gorgeous Positano. This place is so beautiful. Words can't begin to describe it! It is set high on the hills above the most magnificent blue water. You wander down cobble stone paths to reach the beaches and main town, and it's truly worth the 15 minutes of stairs. Well I say that, but had a big fall coming home last night and have taken a fair chunk of skin off my knee and foot....Italian wine for you! So far I ... read more

Amalfi Is Beautiful I must lie. I am not currently in Amalfi. I was never in 'Amalfi' ... just on the Amalfi Coast! I'm in Salerno. It was not on the list, and I forget how to add to the list. I've had a pretty good few days. I met some great people in Florence - Kate, Mike, and Mark - and partied the last two nights I had in Florence with them. Kate is originally from Hawaii, but is studying in upper New York State, so not too far from me. Mike and Mark are from Northern California, so farther. We went out for dinner the first night we met, and then to a bar. It was a Monday night, so apparantly, no clubs were on as they had closed the bottom level that contained ... read more
