Another example of bad bringing good. The button to push to make the train door open didn't work, so we were stuck going to the next town, which gave us a chance to meet the engineer/driver who helped us figure out how to get back to our destination. She spoke pretty good English, too. Scilla is a town built on rock starting from the beach up. I wanted to swim, but it was a bit too windy. We've walked the "passagiata" along Corso Garibaldi several times. People walk, talk, shop, etc. Dogs are welcome.... read more

Day Two of driving found Bill at the wheel... After an Italian breakfast at the bar/cafe (coffee and a pastry), we went back to the Bristrot where our new English/Italian friends made us eggs and toast. They helped us plan our route for the day, including a side trip to a view point a half hour past the village. We set off, thinking we knew just where to go, but it did not urn out to be true...Our first wrong turn happened in the first ten minutes. We were supposed to be looking for a sign to the "Sanctuario Maria del Pollino". We saw a sign that said just "Sanctuario" and decided to go that way....The road turned to gravel as it wound around the mountain, past cows with ringing bells and fields of wild flowers. ... read more

Geo: 38.2537, 15.7152The plan - get out of Naples as soon as possible this morning, and head down to the beaches of Calabria, a region considered by Northern Italians to be a backwater, dangerous and ruled by the mafia. Of course, plans rarely work out, so we were stuck in Naples for several more hours than intended, as we showed up at the train station only to find all the seats on the two early southbound trains to be fully booked, unless we wanted to stand on the train for nearly three hours!In the end, this wasn't the worst thing, as it gave us a few hours to wander around Naples and verify that last night wasn't just an illusion, that it was indeed a changed city.
