I meet Barbie at the bus stop for today’s little exercise, a trip 20 kms or so inland to the small town of Alberobello. I haven’t done overly much research on this, but from what little I’ve seen it seems to be mostly notable for a few houses with conical shaped stone rooves. We walk up from the bus stop into the main square which overlooks the main group of stone topped buildings. It seems that I might perhaps have understated the case just a fraction. There are hundreds of them; an entire large village covering the whole hillside. The view is stunning. Whilst this is the main concentration, it’s certainly not the only one; there are plenty of other examples either by themselves or in small groupings all around the town, as well apparently as ... read more

Alberobello is trulli territory. Martina Franca area is trulli territory. There are hundreds. Most of the farms and very small villages are constructed in the trulli style. What is a trulli? From the outside you see a whitewashed stone hut with a conical roof. They are limestone dwellings of drywall (mortarless) construction made of roughly worked limestone boulders. The domed/conical roof is built up of corbelled limestone slabs (see instruction diagram). The walls are double skin with rubble core. Doorways and small windows pierce the thick walls. An internal fireplace and alcoves are recessed into the walls. The roof is also double skin with a watertight outer core. Water is collected via the projecting eaves at the base of the roof which divert water through channelled slabs into a cistern beneath the house. Ingenious. We left ... read more

Next stop, the East Coast of Italy. Nowhere in particular to aim for. My sister’s anathema: aimless wandering! We found a beautiful lakeside stop as we cut across the country – eat your heart out Lake Como! Well, no Italianate villas per se but a great bicycle path around the foreshore, a marina and a beach and an endless expanse of water surrounded by hills. And as a bonus, very few people..my kind of place. But we didn’t stay, the coast beckoned. Noara Beach camping found us in a small family run, spotless, beachside site. We had been shouted at going the wrong way down the promenade and then again as we crossed a field to regain our road and were grateful to have found this sanctuary after those hectic sightseeing days in Florence. It was ... read more

I have to tell you how excited we are to be in Alberobello, what a great feel Alberobello has about it, a quaint little town up in the hills off the east coast of Italy! I have wanted to visit here for ages because of the Trullis, these white washed, coned shaped rock roof homes are just so extraordinary! We left Lecce at 11.15am for a Rome bound train with only about 4 stops to Rome, but Bari was one of them so disembarked in Bari and caught a local bus to Alberobello as no country trains run on a Sunday, arrived in Alberobello at about 2.15pm so it wasn't too bad! We have fallen in love with it already! These homes are very unique to the Puglia area and it appears they were originally built ... read more

Well, here are In Italy at the start of our touring and biking trip. We flew Bergen to Rome where we connected with Charlie and Viv, and Ian and Lorraine. We then flew to Bari where we were driven for and hour to Matera. We arrived at our hotel in the Sassi, an area that is known for it's cave dwellings, some in ruins, some restored and some in the more modern environment due to the government moving the people out of some of the older, unstable areas into new cave/rock or apartment accommodations during the mid 19 hundreds starting in 1952. Entirely dug out of rock along the steep slopes of a valley it is much more than I expected. When arriving at the Hotel Antico Convicino we had a young chap to help us ... read more

Where is Suzy today? She is sitting on a sosta in Alberobello in Puglia the home of the trulli. The sun is shining . Things are back to normal again and life on the road good. Forgotten quickly are the frogs and the neighbours. A bit like having a baby. Painful at the time but soon forgotten. Why are we in Alberobello? What is the connection with James Bond, 007, Ian Fleming and Truly scrumptious? . If you have not got it then I better put you in the picture . Ian Fleming was the author of James Bond 007 . He also wrote silly stories a cross between a fairy story and a ripping good yarn. Got it yet. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. No we are not going in the hunt for 007 nor to ... read more

A drizzly morning, a quick breakfast and off to find an early regional treno to Alberobello. We really feel very clever locating these and using the different automatic ticketing machines. The trip of 64 kms took us through a lot of agricultural areas - olives and grapes, vegetables and some citrus. Long before we reached our destination we could see Trulli houses in the fields and many of them still occupied, with a few clearly used for storage. The trulli houses at Alberobello were great to see and our only disappointment was that the museum wasn't open as seemingly it showed the tools and equipment used to built the houses and construction methods. The museo also linked to the Museo of wine and olive oil so that was not open either. But we wandered through the ... read more

So much to say today. I went to Alberobello, where the locals figured out what to do with all the rocks that make up this land. They built Trulli, houses with cone shaped roofs all made of slabs of rock. I'd seenthe city, pictures of them and was sort of bored with the idea of a bunch of houses with cone shaped roofs. I figured I take a quick look and be on my way, instead I wandered from street to street in awe of these strange structures that were each completely different one from another. I know something about working with rocks since I always make walkways where ever I live using the local rocks. Rocks demand that you look at them and figure out which one will fit properly. Thus every house is different ... read more

Once again I had to return to Naples to join my next Peregrine tour group; this time it was only a brief overnight stay in a very noisy hotel before moving on. That tour took in the highlights of southern Italy and finished at Bari on the east coast. The group was made up of a Kiwi dairy farmer and his wife (on their way to a Jersey breed conference in Albania of all places); a retired Scottish emigrant to NZ (who kept his money in little Ziploc bags); a SA couple who were into botany/horticulture and me. Our cheerful tour leader had the most likely name of Leonardo Richardo and delighted in singing during dinner. I thought that the tour might not be have been as physical as the last two but a climb up ... read more

We have just returned from a mid week escape to Puglia - the heel of the boot. Puglia is known as the 'deep south' of Italy and is a province less frequented by hordes of tourists than the more traditional destinations. We were lucky enough to visit in time to see the last glimpses of Autumn as most of the trees still had amber and red leaves. Although it was chilly, we avoided the rain and had clear blue skies the majority of the time. Our first stop was the town of Alberebello which is about 3 hours from Naples. Alberebello is famous as the home of the Trulli Houses. A Trullo house consists of a round base made of white limestone topped with a circular grey slate cone roof - a Smurf House! The houses ... read more
