A pleasant surprise at Portrush! The weather cleared and we woke up to a warm, sunny day. Unplanned, we drove over to the Royal Portrush Golf Club, (home of the 2019 Open Championship and Rory McIlroy’s former home course) thinking we might get a last minute tee time. Lo and behold, the only time was with another twosome. Incredibly it was Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry. What a golf game!! Both Debra and I had record scores, I shot a 74 and Debra finished with 85. I had a “hole in one” on the 155 yard hole #3, par 3 and on the 510 yard par 5, hole #12, I actually drove the ball off the tee within 30 yards of Rory’s drive. It was an incredible day topped off by having a beer with Rory ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 27th February - The original seaside - Bray In medieval times, Bray was on the southern border of the Pale. It is on the borders of Dublin and Wicklow and at the edge of what was once ‘English-controlled’ government based in Dublin Castle known as the ‘pale. To venture any further, into areas not controlled by the English was considered to travel in dangerous country and was unacceptable, hence the phrase ‘beyond the pale’. The development of the town that we see today is largely attributed to William Dargan a railway entrepreneur in the 19th Century. Thanks to the arrival of the railway in 1834, the bustling town developed as a popular seaside resort and became known as the “Brighton of Ireland”. Eamonn Quinn bought two sites in the town - one was a field, ... read more

This morning we began with an Irish breakfast of eggs, heavy ham and sausage, or porridge and fruit... I had the latter. Once out the door of our hotel we walked with Father Michael through The Gateway into one of Ireland’s most important monastic sites right next to our Glendalough Hotel. This early Christian monastic settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. The round tower. A bell tower was built almost 1,000 years ago by the monks of St. Kevin’s monastery, it was also used as a place for refuge for monks and as a lookout tower. We happened upon the remains of the Cathedral, several churches and a structure known as the Priest House, the name is derived from an 18th century of bringing priests to be readied for burial and also ... read more

We awoke with a time limit on our self discovery of the Irish land we are visiting. We headed to Bewley’s for a great Irish breakfast of porridge and scones before heading to the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology... from Celtic art to Medieval Ireland is covered. Can you say “COOL”? Also bog bodies are displayed... well preserved bodies which have been found in Irish bogs - some date back to 175 BC ?... An elderly lady who was enjoying the exhibit as much as I, came up to me and offered to take a pic for me with the “old” guy... she said it would portray me as even younger ... I declined. ? We finished our sight seeing excursion just in time to meet up with pro story tellers, Jay Stailey and Tom ... read more

Another early start and long day of adventures. We checked out of the place in Dublin, and were delighted that the GPS could work. We were NOT delighted with the terrible traffic - and we had hoped to go easily south from the city. Oh well. We went the "fast" way to Powerscourt Garcens and they were gorgeous, AND the temperatures rose to about 70 and such sun that I have a red neck now! Rhodies were out, and black tulips. This used to be a huge home with estate, but the house suffered fatal fire in the 90s. Then we headed over to the highest waterfalls in Ireland (lovely but not very tall) and then over the river and thru the woods to Glendalough, a monastic settlement of great import. Lovely walk. We didn't really ... read more

Ireland - only for the Brave 1 14th April 2018 “Did we get on the wrong boat, Janice?” There’s only one piece of the jigsaw left for us to complete our motorhome map of mainland Europe. It’s green and it’s an expensive ferry ride away. Eyes there are smiling, mountains sweep down to the sea and it’s a long way to somewhere or other. They have shamrock, fairies and leprechauns and jet-black beer with froth and a toucan on the top. Got it yet? It’s mid April: the snowdrops in our garden at home in Norfolk, UK, are finally over and the daffodils are just about hanging on. Frog spawn appeared in the pond overnight and a blackcap was singing its heart out somewhere close by in the forest. Rain and cold weather seem to have ... read more

Day 14 Woodenbridge. 90km This was the first day that I never used my wet weather gear - marvellous. Whilst we only did 90km it was not as easy a day as I had though it would be with 900m of climbing. No big hills but plenty of rolling stuff and I often wondered why I ever bothered to shift the chain onto the big ring. We sauntered through Wexford and then hit a headwind for a long way as we headed north just a kilometre or two from the coast. It improved as we took a minor road to Blackwater as we became shielded a little by the trees. The houses along this coast are generally much better with many newish ones and quite a few thatched ones on various states of repair. A number ... read more

Our shore excursion from Dublin was again by Paddywagon Tours. The motorcoach tour would take us to the Wicklow Mountains and the Glendalough monastic site, then return to Dublin for a city tour. The Wicklow Mountains range south of Dublin. The mountain peaks lie mostly inside Wicklow National Park, but there is a considerable amount of private farming and dairy cattle and sheep raising going on in the valleys. It's a very scenic area, and in August the heather was in bloom. Our driver/guide said he regretted that few Dubliners visit this natural area so close to the city. We took the scenic drive up to Glendalough on the Eastern side of the park. Glendalough (Gleann Dá Locha or Valley of the Two Lakes) is the central attraction in the park. The two lakes are referred ... read more

Danach ... read more

After breakfast at Madeline's, Kathy and I spent our down day in Tenahely hiking an 8 mile rails to trails loop. It was level and easy. Probably good for our legs. I kept asking Kathy for the map and she finally told me "Can't we just go without looking at the map?" So I stopped asking for the map. Thirty minutes later she asked where are we. I told her I didn't know. We also toured the residential portion of Tenahely and visited the local realtors shop for window shopping local rentals. Some very nice properties that are affordable in the area although this is not the preferred location. We also scope out the bus transportation back to Dublin tomorrow. The bus strike is still on and looks like it will interfer with our travels. We ... read more
