We left Dublin for Wicklow. We drove up into the Wicklow Mountains, a gorgeous landscape. We stopped at Powerscourt, a grand estate with extensive and beautiful gardens. We were left to ourselves to roam the grounds. I walked around with Serena, who had arrived late the night before. We spent some time in the Japanese Garden, the rose gardens, and the slightly unnerving pet cemetery. We went deeper into the mountains and came to Glendalough monastery, a place I had first read about in an Edward Rutherford novel. It's one of the oldest Christian monasteries in Ireland. Its grounds were so beautiful. Its ruggedness held great contrast to Powerscourt's perfect landscape and gardens. Glendalough was so natural and peaceful. We took a tour of the various ruins and the tower and monastery itself and were then ... read more

There is internet service in the middle of nowhere!!! I'm in Glendalough right now (named for Glenn Da Loch), in County Wicklow, surrounded by the Wicklow mountains. We arrived by bus last night around 8 so we couldn't see how beautiful this place is. At 9:30 this morning I went on a walk with Laura G., Krista, and Andrea and we discovered both of the lakes this valley is known for. They're called Upper Lake and Lower Lake (...neither of them has to do with Glendalough...), and we're about half a block off of Lower Lake. Our hostel is bright yellow and doesn't quite fit with the greens and browns of this time of year, but it sure makes it easy to find! We walked along the footbridges by Lower Lake and eventually found a path ... read more

Since my last blog, I have learned much more about my host family, the Irish culture, and teaching in Ireland. My host family is very wonderful. I was extremely worried about the money situation since the exchange rate from the American dollar to the Euro is so poor. I am not as worried anymore because for 175 Euros a week (~$250 American Dollars), I get my own room with plenty of storage for all of my things, a warm shower every morning, three meals a day, and my host mom does my laundry. I do not think this is a bad deal at all. I really don't see myself spending too much money on things other than travel. My host family consists of the mother, Muriel, the father, Alistair, two sons, Alexander (13), and Kenneth ... read more

Currently, it is 3am here in County Wicklow, just 17 miles south of Dublin, Ireland. I should be sleeping, however my sleep schedule is quite thrown at the moment as it is only 10pm back home. When I arrived at the Dublin Airport Saturday morning I was tired from the flight but so excited about all the new things I would see in the moments to come. My flight over was filled with Irish citizens wishing to return to their native country from a visit in the States. All of the citizens I met were kind and full of life. Once I picked up my baggage (all of it thank goodness) and met up with Sarah, a girl from Minnesota who is also teaching and living in the same host family, we left Dublin on ... read more

Last Saturday all of us went to Glendalough (glen of two lakes) and the Wicklow Mountains. It is a monastery that was founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin, but the buildings date from the 8th through 12th centuries. It is located about an hour and a half from Dublin and is nestled into the mountains. Glendalough was once the religious philosophy learning center of Europe. Apparently Ireland was having a golden age while the rest of Europe was in the Dark Ages. A lot of the main abbeys around Europe were started by Irish priests. It is a beautiful monastic community by two lakes and lots of walking trails. The monks house, the round tower, and the church are all still standing. The cathedral is missing the roof and parts of some of the ... read more

so we woke up a pretty sore (no sleeping pad on a wood floor not so much the most comfortable) and started off. we hiked down into glenmalur valley, then we were hoping to get a lift in laragh, which is the closest town to glendalough. so we get off the wicklow way and start hiking up the road, sticking our thumbs out. eventually we score a ride with dominic, a guy who lives in glenmalur. it's a real good thing, because we would have been walking for a few hours to get into laragh. and he tells us some interesting things about ireland, we drove through some of the last remaining old-growth forest in ireland - the english cut almost all of it down in 1600 (that blows my mind) to make battleships. oh, and ... read more

....in my tent....in a shelter....on the wicklow way. so after waking up (which is a bit deceptive, because that would imply that i slept, which didn't happen because of the drunk snoring man that stumbled to bed at 4:30 in the hostel) and asking how to work the shower, had breakfast and down to the bus station to get to glendalough (glen da loch in gaelic, valley of the two lakes). it's about an hour south of dublin, one of the oldest monastic centers in ireland, dates from 10th and 11th century. there were some chapels and a graveyard, very peaceful and "irish." there was even a guy playing a flute on the way in, stereotypical irish in a very good way. we had lunch by the upper lake, eating our soda bread and water. quite ... read more

Rain again this morning but this time very heavy so no-one else interested in going out at all. I braved the day with an umbrella and had the monastic site pretty much to myself. It was wonderful to stroll around the old church, graveyard and especially the round tower. Drove the couple of last hours to Dublin and home Exhausted, happy and holding great memories of beautiful Ireland... read more

Hey everyone -- we're in Hollywood! Well, we WERE in Hollywood. Hollywood, Ireland. But it made us miss home... We were on the way to Glendalough (glen-da-lock), a beautiful spot in the Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin. Glendalough is the home of Saint Kevin. Who knew there was a saint with my name? (Well, Erin, for one, who booked us in a wonderful B&B here.) The big draw here is the amazing scenery, which was somewhat reminscent of my motherland of the Pacific Northwest. Vaguely like Montana (the nice part) or Wyoming (the non-Dick Cheney part). Lots of fir trees, rolling hills, and wonderful streams where you can see many feet into the crystal-clear water. We checked out the surrounding area, stopping at St. Kevin's monastery. Kevin was a wealthy guy, who gave up all his ... read more
