Wexford to Killarney Arrived in Dublin and picked up the car headed straight down the highway to Wexford to find ourselves booked into wonderful accommodation (thankyou Denise).Wonderful indoor heated pool sauna and spa. Timing was perfect just starting to feel a bit jaded so took the rest of the day off, did the washing and took advantage of the facilities to iron out my aches and pains. Up early for big day. First stop Johnston Castle and Irish agricultural Museum and estate mostly used for research farming. My driver always enjoys looking at farm machinery and I enjoyed a comprehensive display of early Irish furniture (Saved from the vast containers that were shipped to the States in the 70 and 80 to satisfy the antique demand). We both enjoyed the exhibit on the Potato famine and ... read more

Hello friends! I'm sorry for my absence but once again, the internet decided not to work up in the hills of Wales. i can't say I blame it, for there is not much there but sheep and welsh ponies. And a few people too. My host sent me on my way to a town that I can neither spell or pronounce where I met Jen Jones, a wonderful woman who has amassed a huge collection (over 300) antique Welsh quilts. Being a quilter and being from the states, I received a Queen's welcome and she gave me a personal tour of the quilts she had on display at the gallery. Most of these quilts dated from the late 18th to early 19th century. Quilting lost favor after the second world war and is now enjoying a ... read more

SIX DAYS TO COUNTDOWN!! Preparations are still ongoing - currently trying to brush up on my Spanish and make final calls and what needs to be packed. Suprised at how the costs have totted up in advance though going mad with the shopping in 53 Degrees North two weeks ago didn't help I suppose. Flights are 965e into Lima on the 10th of Sept with return booked from Bogota, Colombia on the 18th of December. Add to that vaccine costs of 216e, travel insurance costs of 115e and 300e spent on a variety of things (Zip trousers, sleeping bag liner, plug adapter, thermal top and bottoms, Levi Jeans, safety pouch, travel cushion, foil blanket, travel towel, pair shorts etc) to you get the idea. Slight feeling of nerves at the moment at the prospect of my ... read more

The relatively fine weather of yesterday has deserted us this morning which is a shame as we had an interesting coastal route planned for today’s drive north to Enniscorthy. In fact the misty rain had taken the scenery away and it was just the lights on the cars that reminded us the roundabout outside the hotel was still there. We negotiated the Kinsale Roundabout successfully in one attempt this morning even though the traffic volumes were heavier than yesterday and it was a bit more daunting making sure we were in the right lane to head onto the N25. Despite the rain which didn’t appear to want to ease up we still took the N25 which would lead us to the coast at Dungarvan where we switched onto the R675 which from time to time would ... read more

4. Moving to Wexford After this trip from Rosslare up to Wicklow and back again, my cash supply was running very low. I asked the B&B manager for a cheaper room. As he didn't have one he made a deal for a wholesale winter price without breakfast until the following Monday. It gave me 4 days to find a place to live... in Wexford. In the classifieds of the local paper there was a bedsitter to let for 75€ per week. John, the B&B manager, phoned and made an appointment for me to see it on the Friday at 12:30. Meanwhile I stayed in my room using my iPad and the WiFi internet connection there to check schools in the area where I could possibly get a job as assistant teacher. I also registered with an ... read more

3. From Wicklow back to Rosslare When I figured I didn't have the charger for my iPad, I first thought that I had left it in my car but I soon got an e-mail from the B&B in Rosslare that I had left it there. Great, I thought, now I'll have to go back to Rosslare and the idea appealed to me very much! Wicklow was fine but I had no vibes for it. I learnt that it had been a Viking settlement and then a Norman one, that it was famous for all the films that had been made there, 'Brave Heart' among them, the latest one being 'Asterix' featuring Gérard Depardieu... oh really?! So after two nights in the friendly B&B in Wicklow I headed back south to Rosslare, to Arklow by the coast ... read more
