On Friday morning, the international students were given a bike tour of the lovely city we get to call home for the next 5 months. The weather for the tour was miserable. It was rainy, windy and cold and riding a bike seems to magnify all of it. As we went along the tour guide told us stories and history about the various different things we were seeing and also tried to give us a since of direction in the city. At one point, the guide told us how he used to own a family business, a news shop that had been in his family for over sixty years. The shop had to close when the recession hit though. He also told us how on the weekends, he is a doorman at a local hotel. This ... read more

Tonight I got to have my first Irish pub experience. The pub was called Geoff's (Jeff's). It was your stereotypical pub. Many beers on draft with many Irish men sitting around tables drinking and having a good time talking and telling stories. It was dark and the walls were the original stone. Creaky wood floors and furniture topped off the entire experience. It will be Geoff's that will forever be in my memory as the place I first had a pint of Guiness. I went in with an open mind, and to my surprise I actually really enjoyed it. I believe it when they say, "it taste better in Ireland". For dinner, I had a new take on old pub grub and had Morrocan lamb scewers that were delicious. I had good company too, now that ... read more

So after two flights and a roller coaster like bus ride, I have finally reached my destination of Waterford Ireland. I am in my new home for the next 4 months while I am studying over here. It's an apartment shared with two other people, but we all get our own bedrooms and bathrooms. It's nothing fancy, but will do, I just wish the Irish were not afraid of heat. Maybe they are just being cheap. Either way it's chilly in my room. Living in an apartment means that I have to cook for myself for the first time. Tonight I had a can of soup because I was cold and tired and didn't feel like cooking or shopping much. Tomorrow is back to the store to buy some more things I realized I will need. ... read more

The place I stayed at last night in Blarney had dogs, and it made me miss my kitties back home. When I checked in to my new place in Waterford, I was super excited to learn there are kitties here! They aren't allowed in the guest sections of the house, but the owner let me snuggle with them for a few minutes near the doorway. It warmed my heart. The drive to Waterford was uneventful. Once I got into town I dropped off my laundry (they don't have laundromats where you do your own out laundry here, you have to drop it off and pay someone else to do it) then went to the House of Waterford Crystal. This place has been on my must-see list for months, ever since I watched a Rick Steves episode ... read more

Geo: 52.2594, -7.10697So today I went for a walk to explore Waterford on foot. It was pretty easy because there isn't much to see on a Sunday. It would appear Ireland is one of those quaint places that honours the old tradition, Sunday is a rest day. The first place I came across was Waterford Crystal. The company was first started in 1783. The owners set up camp in Waterford because Ireland had no tax on luxury items at the time. A tax was introduced in the 1850's and the owners shut up shop. It was re-opened by a couple of Czechs in the 1950's. Now I have seen the factory I understand why the crystal is so expensive. The production process is really hands on. To be a master-cuter at Waterford a person must apprentice ... read more

Looong day of driving but we had a ball! The GPS (aka Kate) took as through all these backroads around the countryside. There were sheep everywhere on the side of the road - seems that the farmers use spray paint as a means of identifying their stock. On our way to visit Connemara National Park (in County Galway) we pulled over to take some photos of the view and two random horses popped their heads up over a hill. Next thing we know, one of them came right up to the car...apparently it wanted to be friends :) (Wish we had a carrot or something to offer). Then on our way for a stopover at The Cat's Bar (just outside Cappoquin, in County Waterford - run by distant relatives of the Whelan family) we had to ... read more

Somehow I missed this entry, so adding it a month later. After a leisurely start to the day, we headed off on a scenic route which would take us through Waterford, along the coast and back to Callan. Apart from the motorways there is no fast way to get anywhere because many roads have no verges or are narrow. Some roads are labelled, some aren’t. All properties are not numbered, so finding someone in the sticks without instructions is almost impossible. We did the local roads to the motorway and then the M9 to Waterford, a new and very good motorway. After calling at the Information Office for a street map, we set off to walk and see the various attractions. After Kilkenny, we were very under-whelmed by this city. The pavements need a good clean ... read more

It came so quickly, my last day with my family in Ireland. We started our day at 8am when we got in the car and headed down N24 to Waterford. About halfway there, we took a slight detour to Cashel. We visited the Rock of Cashel, also known as St. Patrick’s Rock. The reason it got its name is because the Castle was built on a huge rock by the town of Cashel. There is a story that the devil was flying all around Ireland and took a bite out of a mountain a few miles from Cashel and dropped it where it lies today. On the tour of the Rock, I learned about all the buildings that are there: The Round Tower, the Cathedral, the Chapel, the Bishop’s living quarters, and the house of the ... read more

The morning promised good things when we got up, for one thing it was not raining and for another we could see blue in the sky. Bob unloaded the scooter from the garage, with a little difficulty as the way we are parked meant that the Tandy garage was too high for the scooter ramp to ramp properly. Once unloaded and waterproof jackets packed in the scooter carriers, just in case, we set off. Didn’t get far, not even to the campsite gates as Bob was having problems steering. Back to the Tandy to put some air in the tyres then off we went again, for real this time. We headed down the hill to Tramore which looked, yesterday as we drove through, to be a lively seaside resort with a lovely deep, wide sandy beach. ... read more
