Well it’s the last day of the Wild Atlantic Way (WAW) so we set off from Baltimore back to the town we came through Skibbereen and made our way to Tow Head Bay. Now previously I had told Mike that this was going to be the easiest day driving - well this proved to be totally wrong and started off not very well. It appears that for this leg of our journey we are not getting much help from the WAW signs as they are honestly few and far between and the towns we are going through, well the Irish like to keep their town names a secret because they they don’t tell you the name - even google maps could not help so it was just guess and go and sometimes turn around and go ... read more

Yesterday a few of us international students took the bus out to the little coastal town of Tramore. It was a beautiful town that sat right on the edge of the sea. The trip started out with some adventure as we had to chase the bus down because we were a bit late. Once we caught the bus, thanks to Chris my roommate, we were on our way to Tramore. It was a short little trip by bus, about 25 minutes. As we came over the hill into town the few of the sea was beautiful. Once we got off the bus we made our way down to the beach front where although it was quite windy and chilly the Irish were still out and about, some even trying to surf in the sea. Once we ... read more

The morning promised good things when we got up, for one thing it was not raining and for another we could see blue in the sky. Bob unloaded the scooter from the garage, with a little difficulty as the way we are parked meant that the Tandy garage was too high for the scooter ramp to ramp properly. Once unloaded and waterproof jackets packed in the scooter carriers, just in case, we set off. Didn’t get far, not even to the campsite gates as Bob was having problems steering. Back to the Tandy to put some air in the tyres then off we went again, for real this time. We headed down the hill to Tramore which looked, yesterday as we drove through, to be a lively seaside resort with a lovely deep, wide sandy beach. ... read more

10/06/2012 Heading South (and it’s not raining !) As soon as we left the campsite we looked for fuel, as the Tandy tank was pretty empty. It is frightening to pay €100 for a few litres of liquid gold but at least our mpg is quite good so won’t need to fill up again for a while. Once away from the city we took the Old Military Road, R115, through the heart of the Wicklow Mountains. This leads over a quite wild moorland area of mainly peat bogs – we could see all round us, where the peat sods had been cut out. The road surface was pretty awful so we didn’t do this stretch of the trip very fast. The next section of the drive was also slow in places as we were taking the ... read more

I got permission from school to visit my distant family in Ireland this weekend and its been great! I met my distant "cousin" Regina Heavey at the airport in Dublin, and we got off to a great start with a bus tour of the Irish capital. We saw all the major sights including Trinity College, Phoenix park (with the second largest obelisk in the world, right after the washington monument), the Guinness brewery, many different cathedrals and churches and much more. That night we drove down to Waterford, and I learned a bit about the town's history, the famous Waterford crystal company, and Ireland's viking heritage. We stopped for pizza and had the local specialty pizza (topped with everything from pepperoni, to pineapple, to bacon, to corn, and peppers) followed by some great ice cream. Afterwards ... read more
