T-shirt weather greeted us so we delayed our departure from Donegal to 'go-have-another-look-round'. Beautiful place. Made our way through a few countryside tracks to the beach. Tide was out and no-one was around. Walked through the dunes to feel the windswept grasses. Back on the road we passed through beautiful (again) Ballyshannon and headed towards Enniskillen along the Lower Lough Erne which was so calm it was mirror like. We stopped numerous times to walk amongst the forest trees lining Erne. Enniskillen is perched amid a web of waterways and is a very appealing town with a 1.6km long main street that rides the roller-coaster spine of an island drumlin. Jane walked most of it "window shopping". I preferred the attractive waterside setting. However, together we did indulge ourselves at the BEST café called, "The Jolly ... read more

Today is the day! We have two rental cars to transport us through the countryside. Mike F & I will drive, navigated by Michael and Greg. The quote of the day is actually a bible verse. Be Strong & Courageous. Do Not Be Afraid, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go! Joshua 1:9 We leave sunny Galway (and Jack & Carol / Park Hotel) for the northern western countryside. The village of Cong in County Mayo is our destination, Michaeleen's Manor B&B, with a detour through the Cong and Ashford Castle grounds.... read more

Es ging ... read more

After checking the weather again when I got up -it looked to have improved considerably from the day before. I thought I would be forced to don my full rain gear to day but was able to get by with out any rain gear. I did get spit on a couple of times but overall it was overcast but dry. I've learned that the best way to forecast the weather here is to look outside ?. The trip from Westport was only 180km but took over 3 1/2 hours to make it to The Harvey's Point hotel. The Hotel is isolated outside of town on a beautiful lake (Eske). My room was gigantic with a parlor room as you enter then a bar area, huge bathroom and large combined bedroom and living room. The hotel is ... read more

The Galway Races with the Caulfield's I arrived at the Connacht Hotel in Galway about 4:30 after a windy ride on the Motorway. The Connacht is an ok hotel and certainly served my needs. I took a cab into town and had dinner in a place called Kirby's. My meal was outstanding and was the dinner referral from Bill Eagan who I met at "A Bunch of Grapes" Pub. Bill is a US transplant, I'm actually surprised about how many US pat's I run into. Walked through the Latin quarter and hit a couple bars with my friend Eammon recommended. Tuesday morning Eammon drove over to the hotel and chauferred me to Caulfield Industrial Distribution. I was very impressed with the operations Eammon and Tony (his brother) have driven and the level of value added they ... read more

Up and sat out by the lake for an hour before breakfast, so peaceful and beautiful on the lake. Mary cooked an amazing breakfast and it just seemed to keep coming, no lunch today. Stopped at the Aughnanure Castle just down the road from our B&B. Aughnanure Castle is one of well over 200 tower houses in County Galway built by large, wealthy, land owning families. It has been restored but was closed for some repairs so we could only see the gardens, but it was really amazing as it was our first castle. When talking to the ladies on the desk they suggested to see Parkes Castle out of Sligo. Called into a candle making shop on the way into town. What a lovely couple, they have been making candles for 22 yers and sell ... read more

BRuised , my right side looks like I broke my arm- but I am Happy.. I have always wanted to learn how to shoot clay pigeons. Jeff didn't! We are staying at an Estate where one of the "things to do" is to learn how to shoot clay pigeons. A little nervous but determined we set off on a 10 minute walk , passed a dead mouse and off we went to learn. Here is how it goes- You clutch the rifle close to your shoulder and against your cheek. The clay puck is projected and you have to follow it till you line up with the rifle and shoot. and shoot.. well out of 25 shots - i hit TWO .. how exciting .. Jeff was amazing he shot those pigioens... read more

We find ourselves high on a desolate hillside in County Mayo en route to County Donegal. This was no ordinary hill for it is occupied by an airport. An airport that to the uneducated has no obvious reason for being. There is no significant population in the immediate vicinity. The airport has no military significance – past or present. It was only built in the mid 1980’s. The dream of Monsignor James Horan to bring employment to an impoverished corner of the country and allow easy access to the nearby Knock Shrine. Only in Ireland!! The Knock experience was bizarre to say the least. We do not belong to the usual visiting religious group, so it had never registered on our richter scale. It’s a small place, but could quite easily become overrun. The previous parking ... read more

"In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty...." De vraag of we verder zouden lopen of ... read more

Left Inishboffin at 0930 with John Hillis, Moritz, Sally and Pat on Board. We arrived in Frenchport just south of Erris head about 1930. The winds were very light southerlies and Moritz managed to get the occasional 4 knots but we were avaraging 3. About 1300 we reckoned we would not make Frenchport before dark so reluctantly we started the enging and motorede at 5 knots. This is an amazing part of the coast. The hugh cliffs of Achill at 624 metres are the highest in the country. The beautiful Inishkea islands south of Black Sod Bay and the impressive Black Rock. We managed to catch a dozen mackerel and after navigating the big swell in the entrance we dropped anchor in Portnafrancach. This is a remote spot with nothing but a few fishing boats anchored ... read more
