And now for the puffins, lots of puffins. They are quite cute and love posing for the camera. Take a look. These little guys (Bird attests the cutest are female) begin arriving in May and then one morning in early August staff wakes on the island and the puffins are gone, some to Iceland, others to Canada. On a few pictures notice holes in the ground, which is where they make nests. We have previously seen puffins in Norway but only on water with our small craft zipping about locating the birds. But here, wow, the puffins pose on dry land or rock in their full splendor. Should you desire to see more puffins, just stop by we have 'em. Ya know, a bit hard to send this as no more looks at these puffin pictures ... read more

One shinning day in July 2022 Bird and HP hopped abord a boat for a one hour ride to Skellig Michael that mystic home of ancient monks and puffins. Monks arrived at Michael during the sixth century, not long after the remnants of the Western Roman Empire were extinguished. They scratched out a meager existence until the early 12th century, eventually being driven ashore where another monastery was established boasting only meager remains. But Michael's are impressive, and all are at least one thousand years old, Landing upon the island apparently can be something of an acrobatic act with our guidebook likening it to "jumping off a trampoline onto an ice ring". In fact boat captains report they are able to affect successful landings on only five days per week, which created no small amount of ... read more

We had planned a trip to Skellig Michael more than 7 years ago after camping in Portmagee overlooking Skellig Michael and the smaller Skellig in our campervan in 2011. Skellig Michael is a rock island 13 km off the PortMagee coastline where in the year 500 AD, some ChristIan Monks had commenced the construction of a Monestary. It is also a film location of the last Star Wars movie so the increased interest in visiting the rocky peak has probably made it possible for us to visit this time around as visitation was a no go when we were last year. The swell in the wild Atlantic Ocean almost caused us to miss this trip as we only found out 45 minutes before our trip on whether it had been cancelled or not. They called us ... read more

Tuesday morning we drove to the Killarny National Park in Southern Ireland where we did a bike ride around one of the lakes. Oh my, it was beautiful. The ride had slight hills and we stopped a lot to have the local wildlife explained to us, to walk thru a cave (and Yes, Shelly did it) and to see the sights. BTW, we are in County Kerry (Keri) and if we went on the longer trip we would go to County Claire. So after today I now know why there is Irish green. Everything here is green and I mean, green, 100’s of shades of green. Then it did the typical weather, rain some, sun some, rain some while the sun is out. – lots of rainbows. Then there is the “Ireland” you see. Rock walls ... read more

We were supposed to take a boat over to the Skellig islands this morning where the 600 - 1200 ad monastery is located. There are 600 steps up to it. Well, the seas were too rough and it was cancelled. Instead we went to the telegraph point (where the first trans Atlantic cable arrived in Europe and hiked up to the point house. We could get a view of Skellig island from there but it is still 8 miles away. Still, the views were great. Next we went to the Skellig Museum in town and got more information on what we were supposed to see. From there we drove to an old abandoned castle that we got to climb thru. We could see the kill hole where they could drop stuff in on invaders, we saw ... read more

After such an eventful day I woke excited about the potential to meet Nora and family. The phone rang in the morning and the lady on the other end asked if I was the granddaughter of Catherine and I just was beside myself. So we set a date to meet at her house later in the day. In the meantime we had a bit of exploring to do. We also had some laundry to do. In Portmagee next to the community center is a bunch of ladies who will do your laundry for you. Even the locals bring in their washed clothes for a dry when it is too wet out. So we took our things in and got them sorted out. Then we decided to do a drive around the Iveragh Peninsula so we set ... read more
