We start our trip on a bit of a kerfuffle. Checking in online the night before, we discover that the extra-leg-room seats on the Toronto-Dublin leg that we had reserved and paid for back in April have disappeared. A call to Air Canada reveals the we were side-swiped by the Boeing Max 8 debacle. The plane had been changed from a Max 8 to an Airbus, which caused the seat reservations to evaporate. Why Air Canada couldn't have alerted us to this problem so we could have reacted earlier is a mystery to me. Anyway, the agent on the phone is able to assign us some other seats with extra leg room, although they are inferior in our opinion to what we had originally reserved. Bummer. At the Ottawa airport, we relate our sad story to ... read more

Tuesday we are preparing to leave Dublin. Tomorrow we travel to our airport hotel, but before we leave, Kathy and I decide to make one last trip to Malahide, a seaside town recommended by our Airbnb host who happens to work in the tourist industry in Ireland. After a coffee at McDonald’s (a quaint irish resaurant located throughout the city) to plan our next 2 days, we board the DART and head north. During our stay, we have made use of 2 things in Ireland: public transportation and our feet. Today is no different. We walked about 3 miles along the coast and then turn towards Malahide and walked thru several established neighborhoods. We were doing fine until we got to the 'subdivision from hell.' We must have walked 6 miles thru this thing and every ... read more

Today I'm back in Dublin again, well, actually I'm in a suburb called Malahide just to the north near the airport. I got in around noon and went straight to Malahide Castle. This one was pretty cool, who am I kidding…they all have been. Also a museum like the Kilkenny Castle, but they let you take pictures inside as long as you don't use flash. The story behind this castle was that it had been in the Talbot family for over 800 years until the last descendant was forced out in the 1970s because she could no longer afford the taxes. The property went to the government and is now obviously open to the public. There are 2 trees several hundred years old on site, those were quite a sight. After the castle tour, I wandered ... read more

It's midnight and suddenly I feel like posting! Today (what is 'today' anymore..?) we took a tour bus to the Malahide Castle & Gardens, and from there, visited a little fishing village called Howth. I was burnt by the time we got to Howth - too much Jameson in the morning will do that - so instead of taking pictures, I took a few several-minute videos of the ride there and back. I might upload those... eventually. I am a lady of few words, so here's some pictures! -Taryn (ps. Jon got a bunch of pictures too. I'll have him upload those later, so stay tuned!)... read more
