We've spent a little time settling in over the last 24 hours, and the place is pretty nice! We've been placed in double rooms, which is kind of unfortunate, but it's not a terrible inconvenience for me yet, as my roomie is a Trinity student who won't move in 'til late september if not october. More importantly though, I like my bed. I spent like 4-5 hours napping there today and boy oh boy is it spectacular. This was a major concern for me, because i'm a cranky bugger when I don't get my sleep, hehe. Amusingly enough though, I didn't spend last night in that bad. Last night we met up with Andrea, my friend who is going to trinity next month, and had a few drinks at a pub. It was her first drink ... read more

Well. We're here. And it's actually a lot better than even the high expectations i'd set for Dublin. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the locals share down to their very core my basic philosophy of life, and that's something I find really refreshing. Some of the guys on the trip are fairly cool, and I lucked out that two of the coolest ones are my housemates, and we have a pretty sick setup by all accounts- though the jury is out until we move in tomorrow. Whatever the case, we're going to be in that nice halfway point between UCD and downtown Dublin that'll provide us with a unique view of the city compared to our less fortunate counterparts. Nick and I have been walking around having a great time, though most of ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the third of four posts about my trip to Ireland with Uffe in 2006. For our third day in Dublin we decided to head to an area known as the Temple Bar which is a lively area filled with bars and other cultural establishments in the center of Dublin. While me and Uffe had certainly spent quite some time in pubs so far on this trip, this day would up that quite a few notches. We started our day in style with a couple of pints at the Oliver St. John Gogarty Bar, a beautiful bar and restaurant all clad in a bright green color that really felt Irish to me. It was a very lovely place but after a couple of pints we decided to continue on and went ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the second of four posts about my trip to Ireland with Uffe in 2006. For our second day in Dublin we decided to just walk around the city and take in the sights as Dublin is a very beautiful city with a lot of historic sites to visit. So with a classical old map in hand we set out to try and navigate Dublin with our first site being the old Grattan Bridge. It was originally built as the Essex Bridge in 1676, then rebuilt in 1755 and then finally rebuilt again as the Grattan Bridge in 1872. From the bridge we headed up to the Christ Church Cathedral and the adjacent museum Dublinia. The cathedral is the oldest of the two medieval cathedrals in Dublin and was built around ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the first of four posts I'll make about a trip I did to Ireland together with my friend Ulf (called Uffe) in June 2006. As my parents and my uncle had decided not to make any more family trips I knew I had to take matters into my own hands. That made this the first ever trip that I planned on my own, a new experience in and off itself. We booked our flights out of Gothenburg, the nearest city to my friend Uffe's home in Trollhättan så I went to him the day before so that we could go to the airport together. However, we noticed that night that Uffe had, in his usual fashion, forgotten to check on his passport which had expired. So, our first order of ... read more

Day 21, Monday, June 12: Edinburgh to Birmingham Got up in the morning and did one last wander through of Edinburgh, before heading to the train for Birmingham. The 4 hour train ride was beautiful even with the impending storm (before this, the weather had been incredible). I got to Birmingham at about 4:30, knowing I would have to hang out at the train station as Kat had to work until 5-5:30.. When 6:30 came around, I decided to call and found out she got stuck at work, so here mom came all the way out to pick me up. We headed to a local pub for a couple of beers and then off to Kat's parents place, where we were cooked a nice steak. Kat and I caught up and then off to bed (seperately, ... read more

Think you're a dedicated drinker? Are you dedicated enough to wake up every morning and drink Irish coffee? -- three at a time -- in a row. How about, are you willing to commit yourself to step dancing wasted for seven hours on a hard-wood floor, waking up with shin splints and doing it all over again? ... Yeah? Well what are you waiting for -- get your ass to Dublin! That was my little advertisement. A high alcohol tolerance helped me survive Dublin -- that and some common sense. Stay at Barnacles Temple Bar hostel. It's on Temple Lane, a cobblestone road in the heart of the Temple Bar district, Dublin's cultural center. Barnacles is two doors from the famous Temple Bar -- a very touristy bar, but a fun bar nonetheless. (I'm going to ... read more
