Ireland the North 2 Day 9. Ardara

The weather is now treating us well. Sunny for most of the day. A headwind for the first half and then in our favour. We had a snack in Killybegs, which is a big crushing port, but light on cafes open on a Sunday so we ate at a Mace convenience store before travelling along what is one of the most spectacular coastal roads in Ireland. The road went up and down but provided some great views of sandy beaches and rock formations with some roller waves for good measure. Lunch was had outside another convenience store in Carrick in brilliant sunshine. Lunch for Brian was an ice cream - hardly cyclists fare - which may have contributed to his toppling off on a later hill. The hills that followed got the legs working as we entered the stratosphere in the Shetland type landscape. A limestone quarry was passed at the top to be followed by the most amazing descent ever down the Glengesh Pass with the Maghera beach down below. The ride along the valley by the Maghera caves and beach is just as stunning with small green islands in the estuary
with a handful of sheep on them, which must have walked over at low tide. Along the road we passed the Assaranca Falls which are in full force due to the heavy rain earlier in the week. The Atlantic Guest House in Ardara is extremely comfortable with self catering breakfast and plenty of snacks and drinks available all day. The quality of the furnishings is first class and the proprietors are really nice. This place is to be recommended and is far superior to the Nesbitt Arms where we originally planned to stay. We are eating there tonight but could not stay overnight since they are down to receive a load of Ukrainian refugees tomorrow. The locals are worried since they will have nothing to occupy themselves with and will no doubt speak little,or no, English.
