It's not a trip unless I get a light sunburn on the first day... and go figure, even in overcast Ireland I shall repeat the pattern. Despite that, it was a wonderful today - first off, slept like a brick which is perfect. Slept so well that I only woke up at 10am... an absolute rarity in a hostel thank you. But that's ok. I caught the next train out to Cobh (pronounced Cove). Since I arrived a little later than I wanted into Cobh, I headed straight to Spike Island. (Think Alcatraz of Ireland... ish) The boat ride was nice, but in full bloody sunlight which is where I think I got my burn. The walking tour was well worth it - I don't think I've ever gone on one with that amount of detailed ... read more

I started later than usual this year - felt very odd being in town for Canada Day and music festivals... The departure was a little dicey yesterday - remnants of storms in Western Canada delayed my first flight, but I had such a long layover it didn't matter. The flight from St. John's to Dublin damn near gave me a heart attack - we dropped or did something and the pressure went down. I felt like I was getting sucked down a drain. Very unpleasant. Needless to say, as per usual I didn't sleep on the plane. I did, however, manage to sleep most of the bus ride from Dublin to Cork. It was raining (shocker!), so I don't think I missed much. I was awake long enough passing through Dublin to see this giant creepy ... read more

May 10 - It rained overnight. The temperature is fine but once again it is cloudy and windy. I took my time and didn't go for breakfast until 9:00. I walked through a different part of St. Stephen's Green to the "Little Museum of Dublin". The museum is located in an old Georgian house with creaky wooden stairs. The main level display is about Christy Brown (of My Left Foot fame) and the 1st floor was everyday and cultural items from the 1930's through to the 1990's all relating to the lives of ordinary Dubliners. The top floor was divided in half - one room devoted to the history of the Irish Times (newspaper) and another room devoted to U2. I wandered over to Merrion Square where there are a number of Georgian houses with different ... read more

Today was a long driving day and Tim and I were relegated to the back seat. There were 2 other people back there with us. We had a lot of driving but we did stop at some neat places along the way. They did a game where everyone had to come up with an adjective that starts with their first letter (of their name) and their name. Tim was Thick Tim (inside joke from college for Nicky and Tim). Nicky was Nice Nicky. Shelly was smiling shelly and I was Cool Claire. But, I remembered 10 other names. I really liked the game. We have a cool group of folks on the trip. All but 1 is from the states, Eva is from the Netherlands. Our first stop is St Patrick's Rock in Cashel. It's an ... read more

Geo: 51.8979, -8.47111After a relatively quick stop in Killarney and a wander through Ross Castle we headed to the south of Ireland. DH was starting to zero in on the land of her people. With both of her parents immigrating to Canada from Liverpool, DH grew up thinking she was a product of the country that gave us fish and chips, and the Beatles. It was only in later life that she discovered that her grandparents had actually come from Ireland, and the Cork area specifically. Given the relative secrecy around her genealogy, I helpfully suggested that perhaps our start point for the shady family tree should be the nearest gaol (prison), and sure enough, Cork had one of the more infamous ones. The Cork City Gaol (although it's not common knowledge, it was often referred ... read more

Train to Cork was a bit of a nightmare. We had to go all the way back to Dublin before going to Cork because of works on the train tracks. We didn't arrive till about 10.30pm so pretty much went straight to bed. The next day was Blarney Castle day! A short but ride from the city centre brought us to the village and a short walk brought us to the entrance of the castle. However what we thought was just a castle turned out to be an extensive property with beautiful gardens. We started off by exploring the castle which was awesome! We climbed up this tiny, narrow staircase that spiraled up the castle. We saw rooms off shooting from the staircase and they led to other rooms. Without the signs I'm are we would ... read more

I had been to Ireland on business before, but I had forgotten just how green and lush everything is. Our arrival in Cork was delayed a little and we had some gray clouds and rain when we arrived. But after we arrived in downtown Cork, the skies cleared and we thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon there. The old architecture is beautiful, but what we really loved was the beautiful people. There's a quiet, gentle happiness in the Irish, and they want to share it with every visitor. We met folks of all ages and stages, but they welcomed us with open arms and encouraged us to enjoy their country. Bowen and I actually some DNA testing done a while back to determine if we had genetic markers for some specific illnesses. Fortunately, those tests were negative. And ... read more

Sunday. Spent the day in Dublin. The weather was cold and cloudy until the middle of the day, when it became cold and sunny. They tell me it’s because of the nor-easterly wind, which is bringing cold air over from Scandinavia. If one was able to find a sheltered spot in the sun, it was quite pleasant. I went in on the bus from my B&B, about a 45 minute trip. The buses are all double deckers, which brought back memories of the sixties and seventies in Sydney. The bus stop to go into town is right on the corner – what I didn’t know is that the bus stop when coming back is about a kilometre away down the road! You do get a lot of walking done here, the public transport seems to stop ... read more

This morning, my hostess recommended I drive the Ring of Beara instead of go straight to Blarney. So I did, but with the recommended shorter version cutting across the middle instead of doing the entire coast. It was beautiful of course, but still didn't quite match my drive through the mountains yesterday. Once I made it to town, I headed straight for the Blarney Castle. I had no idea it was such an attraction! I expected just a castle, but there were acres of land turned into gardens and walking paths and so much to see. I climbed up to the top of the castle right away and was so scared out of my mind I was shaking all the way down. Those stairs. Holy crap. Being afraid of heights, I wanted to just cower in ... read more
