Geo: 51.7064, -8.5233After sleeping late, we found breakfast in the hotel was still being served so we started the day there. We went for a walk for an orientation to the town. We found some restaurants that I had seen online from home and asked the desk clerk to make reservations for us. Natasha was really helpful making reservations for tonight at the Steakhouse and tomorrow night at Fishy Fishy. They both have lots of good reviews. Still getting over jetlag, we did not want to do too much today. We walked around some, found a pharmacy to buy eyedrops for Phil (something here is bothering his allergies), ate lunch, and took the afternoon harbor cruise. It was a bit over an hour long and circled clockwise around staying in the harbor the whole time. From ... read more

Monday 20th dawned bright and sunny, a perfect day for driving westwards along the Wild Atlantic Way. This hugs the coast giving splendid views of peninsulas and inlets, rivers and bays with wide sandy beaches, or patchwork fields in rolling valleys. I thought I saw three seals in the water but as I rounded the headland i saw the whole beach and the group of wet-suited surfers. There wasn't a lot of traffic, just as well as the road was pretty narrow, though often widening out to allow parking to enjoy the breathtaking views. The whole route, all along the jagged southern and western coast is over 5,000 kms, and I could see the attraction of traveling all of it, though I can imagine it would be very wild in wet and windy Irish weather. I've ... read more

Geo: 51.7064, -8.5233The overnight flight was not the best we've had, but not terrible. There was a fair amount of low-level turbulence, and the pilot kept the seat belt sign on for long stretches of time including over half of the nine-hour flight. We had an empty seat between us on the flight. A woman did sit there for a few minutes during boarding, but she saw two empty seats together against the window and moved over there. It is always nice to be able to spread out a little. Yesterday, Bill texted the Service Manager and at least one of the other flight attendants on our flight to ask them to look out for us and take care of us. Near the end of the flight, Kaolipalani(sp?) stopped by to welcome us and offered us ... read more

Saturday 18th June (Happy 74th birthday Paul MacCartney) Cobh classic car rally saw 25 or so classic cars (and my van) lined outside the Commodore hotel on the esplanade. There were MGs, Beetles, Rover, Wolseley, Alvi, all with men peeping under bonnets. I chatted with a couple in their Austin 7; they were English but had retired to Tipperary. They had four vintage cars and a big motorhome that towed the trailer, and went to many vintage rallies round the country. I met a woman who had blagged a lift in one of the cars. She was American, and had left the States 18 years ago and was traveling the world couchsurfing, spending three months in each country. At 11.30 we set off in convoy; a steward at the front in a modern car with a ... read more

Touring in Ireland Tuesday 14th June The 2.45 am ferry from Pembroke to Rosslare was peopled with bodies comatose on bench seats. I had a cup of tea before getting three hours sleep and at 5.45 we were turfed out to the chilly Irish morning. My first port of call was Brosca, west of Waterford, where an old friend, Rod, pointed out the spare room, and went off to work leaving me to sleep. I spent a pleasant day there: he showed me the local Mahon Falls, and I relaxed on a wicker settee with a cute little rust-coloured terrier on my lap and looked over the Comeragh Mountains until a grey blanket of cloud settled onto the foothills. I knew Rod years ago in Leytonstone, and know his brother well, and we know quite a ... read more

We arrived in Cobh, Ireland this morning. They pronounce it Cove. We decided not to take a cruise tour because they did not seem interesting. I booked a tour with eCoach.ie - Blarney, Kinsale Tour a few months ago online. The bus was waiting for us when we got off the ship. We visited Blarney Castle, the bus lets you out and they tell you to return in two hours. We enjoyed this a lot, we do not like following a tour guide and it gave us the chance to go where we wanted. The Blarney Stone is in the castle and if you kiss the stone you will receive the gift of gab, well I passed on that, I talk enough without any additional gifts of gab. The castle has large grounds with different gardens ... read more

Green Green Ireland, Cobh (pronounced Cove), Cork and Kinsall Now that we are finally in Ireland, we understand why it is called the Emerald Isle…lush and green. We disembark from our cruise ship at Cobh and travel 20 minutes directly to Cork. Cork is a small city with lots of personality and seemingly so perfectly Irish. As with many small towns in Europe, it is on a river. We pass by old bridges as well as a spectacular modern new one, shaped like a harp on its side. It is slow going for our bus as we have hit Cork at rush hour. The road curves like a snake through the busy downtown as it follows the river. We are headed to the famous Blarney Castle. The history surrounding the castle is fascinating. Controlled for many ... read more

Today Matt and I decided to head south of Adare to Blarney Castle to kiss the famous Blarney Stone. We were a little worried about weather because when we woke up is was really raining and windy. Good news, once we began traveling the sky's cleared and we had a very nice fall day to experience Blarney and enjoy the gardens and grounds surrounding the castle. After leaving Blarney we continued south through Cork to an adorable little town on the water called Kinsale. We spent time enjoying the quaint shops and pubs, wondering throughout the streets looking for treasures. We ended our day at a local pub in Adare called Auncy Lena's having the traditional Irish dinner bangers and mash and few beers! Perfect Irish day...... read more

(I should have proper wifi tomorrow so pictures will go up on the later blogs... it drives me insane when I can't add them because it would take 30min to do one photo.) I'm writing half of this entry sitting in a stable at Blarney Castle. I don't mind mist, I don't mind rain, but I do mind downpours and what they do to my camera. Anyway, just getting to Blarney was amusing. I had purchased my bus ticket online and the machine on the bus was having nothing of it. It took the bus driver, a bus director and some head honcho guy from inside the bus station to get it to work. Ahhhhh, even funnier when you realize by booking online I saved maybe 50 cents. I laugh at my frugality. Blarney Castle is ... read more
