Ireland Day 8 Gee what a day. 150km with over 1500m of climbing. Luckily it was a dry day and a wind that helped and hindered, as it does when you keep gping along the peninsulas east and west. I completed the Skellig Ring, which is an amazing area. I rejoined the Ring of Kerry at Waterville, where I made my first mistake of the day and went up a wrong road. I returned to Waterville and had a brew and long sausage roll, which seems to be my favourite snack from the supermarkets, along with a made up ham salad sandwich for later. I stuck to the Ring of Kerry route for most of the day and on the occasions I didn't I regretted it due to the big hills which are not just quite ... read more

Best part of our stay in Cork was visiting the Blarney Castle in well the town of Blarney. They did a very good job and had more stuff to do other than just visit the castle. We kissed the stone and gained elegancy and went walking through the gardens. We decided to be thrifty and walk to Blarney. Its a one and a half hour walk outside of Cork (one way). Enjoy the pictures.... read more

We have planned for our day, a trip to Cobh which is the harbour of Cork city from where the majority of Irish people emigrated from in the 1800’s.Along the way we will call into Knocknagree, the village closet to where the Mahoney family lived (my mother’s Catholic side of the family) and also see if we can take our own photos of where Daniel’s parents Michael and Catherine are buried in Rathmore. It has dawned as another typical Irish day so we expect it will follow that the drizzle will clear soon and will remain dry for the day before the drizzle comes back at night. This pattern of weather is becoming very predictable to us. With what could be a long day ahead we left home at 9.30am and headed across the county border ... read more

Geo: 51.8979, -8.47111The morning started with beautiful sunny weather. Our first outing was to the annual meeting of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society, but on the way we stopped off at the Coffee House for a quick breakfast. It's the nearest place to get food, but we hadn't gone in before saving it for when we might be rushed or too tired to go farther. As it turned out, the coffee and croissants were delicious. We should have tried it sooner. The conference took place in St. Peters church on North Main taking about twenty minutes to walk there. We went, although the speakers did not seem to be particularly pertinent to Phil's research, because Lorna had insisted that we go paying for our ten euro registration fee. Phil did find the information about advertising ... read more

Geo: 51.8979, -8.47111This morning Philip left early again for the conference. He had a lunch meeting scheduled with one of the professional genealogists for one-on-one discussion and help with his research so we didn't plan to meet up until late in the afternoon.I did laundry again then went exploring the old city some more. I bought some t-shirts—one at the English market and 2 at the UCC student bookshop. I was able to visit the Boole Library, too, although Lorna had said that she didn't think they would let us in since it is only for students. There are no regular classes going on now, so not very many people were in the library. It seemed small for a university of its size, and they use Dewey which surprised me. Not very many universities in the ... read more

Geo: 51.8979, -8.47111Yesterday, Phil went to class in the morning then we both went on the group field trip in the afternoon. The trip was to Cobh (pronounced Cove) and Midleton. We started with a thirty-minute drive to the Cobh Heritage Centre, and there received a welcome from the centre's administrator who gave us a brief orientation to the centre and some historical background on the town. Cobh was the last port of the Titanic and the exhibition does a good job of describing what it would have been like to be a passenger on the ship. With your admission ticket, you are assigned an actual person's story to follow throughout the exhibition. You might be rich or poor, male or female, traveler or crew, but each person's journey is described and their outcomes after they ... read more

Geo: 51.8979, -8.47111Phil went back to class early and I slept in. When I was up, I found two of the maids working downstairs and asked them about using the washing machine. The one I saw and talked to first didn't understand English, but the other one stepped in and explained how to use the machines. The dryer was pretty simple and like the ones at home, but the controls on the washer were very different. I was almost finished with the laundry by the time Phil got home for lunch. We walked down to the Serendipity Café. For dinner, we ate at a little hamburger and pizza place on the corner nearest to the apartment and the eastern gate of the university. We saw Angie from England and Davina from New Zealand there, and they ... read more

Geo: 51.8979, -8.47111Philip and I both went to the workshop today. Registration was the first item on the agenda and I wanted to be there for it. I sat through the morning lectures, too, although it was often hard to understand the speakers. I haven't acclimated to the Irish lilt yet. It looks like there are thirty to forty participants in the workshop, and Lorna who is the coordinator also introduced some of the speakers and a few volunteers who will help throughout the week. She made a point of trying to get everyone talking to each other and said that Philip and I shouldn't sit together but spread out to meet others. We ate lunch in the student canteen down the hall from the lecture room. It was boring, but also cheap. Later we got on ... read more

Geo: 51.8979, -8.47111We had our last breakfast in Kinsale and checked out of the hotel about 11:30. We hadn't moved the car since arriving on Thursday and got in to drive it back to the airport. We won't need a car while we are in Cork. During planning for the trip, I thought we'd do more touring around Kinsale while we were there, but we were content to walk to the sights nearby and skip the ones farther away.On the way back to Cork, we stopped in the village of Riverstick for a photo op in front of Allen's Bar and Lounge. I had seen it on the Google map photos before we left home and wanted to see it in person. It wasn't open then and did not have hours posted so we just took ... read more

Geo: 51.7064, -8.5233Today we took a long walk (over two miles one way) all the way to Charles Fort on the opposite side of the harbor. Most of the way was the Scilly Walk which wound through trees and seaside homes and offered lovely views of the water. When we reached the end of the footpath, we had another half mile or so to go on the high road which was all uphill to get to Summercove and the fort. At the fort, we purchased Heritage Cards that can be used at several of the sites we plan to visit this trip. Twenty euros each for seniors, and they are good for a year at about fifty places that charge anywhere from one to thirteen euros for admission. We plan to go to enough of them ... read more
