After a fun yet exhausting two weeks traveling throughout Europe, I got back to the U.K. late Sunday night. We departed for Cork on Thursday, April 6, and thus began our European expedition. I was so excited when we finally landed in Cork. The air smelt of Irish countryside, which had an odd aroma of cow manure, but I loved it. Being Celtic Club Secretary '04, I felt as if I had finally made it to the homeland, and I was immediately enchanted. The next day we went to Blarney to see the castle and kiss the Blarney Stone. The gardens surrounding the castle were gorgeous. Lush and green. The country is really so verdant, it's amazing. I loved it. We had a lot of fun at the castle with pictures and such, a stray dog, ... read more

I got a new stamp in my passport today! I was looking at my friend Brad's passport and he's got tonnnnnes of stamps and visas from all over the world in his. I'm so jealous. I'm just going to Europe this year, so I'll get at most 3 stamps. Oh well, it's better than none. Anyways, I'm in Ireland! I already like it a lot. Brad and I hopped off the bus (after 15 hours) and wandered into the Garda (Police Station). We said we were trying to find the tourist information centre and they didn't feel like giving us directions so they just DROVE us there. Isn't that nice? I'm really excited about being here! We're headed west tomorrow and I can't wait! My 12 hours in London yesterday were nice. I got to catch ... read more

Hello to whomever may get this... I just wanted to send a quick update and let you know where I am at. We just arrived in Cork, Ireland to learn how the Irish celebrate St. Patty's Day. I am sure it should be quite interesting. It was an interesting trip here, we realized last night ~6pm that we hadn't looked into getting to the airport this morning at 5:15am and then found out that the tube station doesn't run that early. Well it was an evening of moving back and forth and realizing that we were too late to find the easist way there...so we bit the bullet and paid for a cab (85 GPB yikes!), versus the other optinon which was leaving for the airport last night and sleeping there... Anyway we made it here ... read more

Beep...Beep...BEEP 4am and my phone alarm is buzzing away like its cool to be waking up at 4am on a Thursday morning. Not only is it early, but its freezing. When I open the curtains the windows are covered in frost and its still pitch black outside. A burst of excitement rushes through me as I know I'm up this early for a reason... I'm off to IRELAND! I stand like a withering feotus in the shower waiting for the water to warm up but when it does I get showered and prepped for a backpacking trip around Ireland. Speeding through the countryside at 4.30am in my Uncles Alfa Rameo we arrived at the airport with about 10 minutes to spare on the check in gate. Before long I'm on the RYANAIR jet to Cork, Ireland. ... read more

This weekend Jay and I went to Cork, Ireland to visit our friend Ryan from Swarthmore. We got in late Friday night and met up with Ryan. We dropped our stuff off at his place and went out for the night. We got back to his flat pretty late and watched some episodes from season three of the OC on Ryan's computer. Sleepless, Jay and I caught the 6AM bus to Dublin. It was a four hour ride through some beautiful countryside. Once we got there we headed to the Guinness factory. We took the self guided tour, got our complimentary pint, and spent some money in the shop. It was a great experience and we were definitely happy with our decision to take the four hour bus ride. We passed on the Irish lunch and ... read more

On one of my daytrips around County Cork I decided to go to a small town on the coast called Kinsale. This is a cool artsy town full of shops and well...artwork. I took the bus in the afternoon to the town center and walked around all day. It wasn't a very eventful day but it was fun. It was also a test to see what its like with a lot of solo time since I would be traveling by myself two months. I walked around town and saw Desmond Castle where they held American POWs in the Revolutionary War. The shops in town were awesome. Some were art, some were good cooking, some were the weirdest imported foods and products I have seen in a while. They had candy shops, and chippers, and restaurants, and ... read more

The short list of things I've done this week: Peaposting (hammering giant posts into the ground and tying chicken wire around them for the sole purpose of giving peas something to climb), planting the REST of the leeks (330, I guess, was not enough), transplanting fruit bushes (actually, this was easy), hoeing and planting lettuce, and building elaborate bamboo structures for beans to climb. I have a whole new appreciation for vegetables. It has been fun, though - and it's hard to doubt that veganism is healthy when you see little kids genuinely excited that the peas are ready for harvest. (I've never seen little kids even remotely happy about peas before. It's eerie.) And the good news is that jam is vegan, so I can have lovely toast and jam and not feel TOO ... read more
