We had a early call this morning. The alarm rang at six and we were out the door before 8am. We made a quick atm stop and then started heading south. On route, we stopped at a Centra for a little breakfast and encountered a very nice sales woman who brightened all of our days by calling us “love”. As we nibbled our breakfast in the car, we headed south from Galway towards Doolin. We were flying in the car because we were trying to make a ferry to the Aran Islands. At one point, we were going to have to pass a huge lorrie (truck) and my tendency is to hit the brakes… but this time Tara coached me thru it…”Don’t slow down, you can do it” and so I speed our little Toyota right ... read more

Freitag 15. Aug. 2008 Doolin, It is Friday night. The rain is pouring outside and trickling against the windows. I am sitting next to the fireplace on a wooden bench. The radio plays Beethoven’s 6th symphony. I have my legs stretched out towards the fire. It sounds quite romantic, doesn’t it? We are on Doolin on the west coast of Ireland. Early this morning we got the bus to Galway then hitchhiked south. It has been raining most of the day but we were fine for the longest time. It took us three rides to get down here. The Hostels are all full, but we got a spot on a campsite in which facilities we are warming up right now. The day before yesterday we went to meet some other couchsurfer. The Evening was really nice. ... read more

July 6-9: LONDON Okay, so as everyone might have expected, the moving every three nights (from hostels none the less), has started to wear on Caitlin and I. That and the continuous, absolute non-stop walking has left our ankles swollen and angry with us. Even still, Caitlin and I have had some superior experiences in each major city. From Barcelona we headed to London. The weather was a bit dreary on the day we arrived, but the sky opened up for the rest of our time there. You would think arriving back into an English speaking country, we would not get lost…HA!...the street our hostel was on changed names 5 times before we arrived at the right leg of the street, and the yahoo-map we printed out had the arrow for our final destination in ... read more

I took the bus from Galway through Doolin & about 15 minutes past to the Cliffs of Mohr. As I said yesterday, traveling through Ireland, is as I'm sure everyone imagines it, very green. Postcard pictures at every turn. I had pretty good weather that day. The bus ride was about 90 minutes. I spent about an hour at the Cliffs. Really beautiful, very dramatic. Got some good pictures and had an enjoyable snack. I learned-it was tradition to give a bride & groom mead ("honey" wine) as a gift that promotes virility & fertility, and they are to drink it for one cycle of the "moon". Hence the term: "honeymoon." Returned to Doolin, a very small town of just 1-2 dozen businesses. I got settled in the hostel; sharing a room with 2 guys ... read more

It's amazing how long it took to get to Doolin from Dingle. As the bird flies, the two towns are maybe 100 miles apart, yet it took about 9 hours of travel by bus. Part of the problem is that you have to go around the river Shannon's estuary, but still, it was pretty slow going. I had a bit of a layover in Limerick, at the head of the estuary, so I walked around the neighborhood surrounding the bus station. In the US, the bus stations are often located in really dodgy areas of town (ahem Cleveland), and I wouldn't feel too comfortable going for a walk with my pack even during the day. However, I have yet to see a bus station in the UK or Ireland where I couldn't walk around. Often the ... read more

After a week of mixed-to-good weather, strong Irish music, selling my bike, and returning to my home base of Cappoquin I have reached my last weekend in Ireland. Stay tuned because over the next couple of weeks I will fill you in on some more of the details and do some wrap up of the trip and what I learned - plus a spacial interactive opportunity bonus offer. How is that for a deal? In sort it is turning out to be a bitter sweat ending. I am tired in the core of my body and ready to settle back down and open the next chapter of life ahead. Each of the last few days has provided little snippets that stir a desire to stay on and soak in every little bit that Ireland has to ... read more

"Depend on the rabbit's foot if you will, but remember it didn't work for the rabbit." Any logical person would understand that the misfortunes I have experienced thus far on my journey are the result of my own lack of skill, ability, and knowledge. I am not a logical person. I believe it is bad luck. I have been cursed. Though my understanding of the mystical realm is a little shaky, one of my students told me that the only way to reverse a curse of bad luck, is to catch and eat a leprechaun. My trip to Ireland was about three things. Finding love, changing my streak of bad luck, and finding the missing pieces of my soul; it was not about eating a human subspecies. And so, I decided to compromise and go on ... read more

So Doolin was pretty much awesome. It's not really a town or a village - there's no convenience store or gas station or even a hotel. It's a road (just barely wide enough for two lanes) that goes from the Doolin pier and connects an Upper Village and a Lower Village. It's about a mile between the two villages, and there's nothing in that mile except for B&Bs, farmhouses, and my hostel. It's something like a national shrine to trad. Everywhere I've been, people talk about the 'legendary' McDermott's and McGann's, which are the two pubs in the Upper Village. I don't know how long they've existed, but it must have been awhile - McGann's is covered in black and white photographs of old trad sessions. And it really was amazing - it was the first ... read more

On Monday nights theres a bar called McDermotts that ha a group of 4 young guys from Ennis that come down and play some traditional Irish music so that was a great time. The music which nauseated me during St. patricks day at outback was a lot of fun in its proper setting. I had some guiness, smithwicks and a delicious bowl of real Irish Stew. I met 2 more Americans who were real laid back and had a good time hanging out with them for the night. This morning I woke up at 7:45am and rented (or hired) a bike for the day for €10 and rode up to the Cliffs of Moher. It took about 45 minutes and it was exhausting and I realized any incline over 0.0004 degrees may as well be a ... read more
