Well we get up in our own time as we have decided not to go too far today as we want to go to the Cliffs of Moher and once again I would like to see the cliffs from the sea. So somehow we get out of Galway as the signs are not very good for the Wild Atlantic Way (WAW) but we eventually get there with some guessing and instinct and we finally leave the County of Galway and make it into County Clare. Now let’s be honest County Galway is very rugged, not as spectacular as I have said before of Donegal but still spectacular in a rugged sense. We make our way to Kinvarra which is supposed to be a very pretty place and yes it is but we keep on track and ... read more

FRI, 05 AUG 2022 – “Day 6: The Burren National Park and the mighty Cliffs of Moher - Now that you’ve a ‘feel’ for Galway, our guide will take you down its narrow medieval streets where you can duck in and out of brightly coloured shops. Try on Claddagh rings and Galway shawls, pass through The Spanish Arch and hear tales of Gaelic bards and visit Galway's ancient fishing village. Then it’s Southwest to The Burren, 125 square miles of limestone rock and The Burren Centre where you’ll see dolmens and megalithic tombs, some older than the Egyptian pyramids. The Cliffs of Moher is next; 14 km of dramatic coastline standing 300 metres above the churning Atlantic. Standing at the ledge, you’ll feel like you’re at the very edge of the world. We’ll also swing by ... read more

Zeer speciaal.... read more

A lot — ok, a LOT — of driving today from Kenmare to Doolin because of GPS misguides. Was fine up to crossing the River Shannon by ferry, but then the gypsy (GPS) took us a good 50 miles off target, the Cliffs of Moher. Then took us equally off course into the middle of farmers’ fields. Then so late to our destination that we bagged it and headed for Doolin. THEN, I tried going the 6 miles myself while Sharon tried to recover from the trauma of tiny-laned, hairpin-turned, tour bus hogging roads, and got lost twice. I needed a beer, and found a nice local Irish red ale to sooth my frayed nerves. We settled into our very nice B&B and headed out for dinner and live music at the pub up the street. ... read more

Signs, Signs, everywhere are signs, Do this, don't do that! Why don't you read the signs! In Ireland, signs are key! whether you are driving, searching the street, or finding your way thru pub walls! Some of the Ireland countrysides, take a bit more courage than others. The Clifden to Doolin travel-day was our most challenging with a two hour-stop in Galway's Friday afternoon traffic. It was indeed a roadtrip day not to be forgotten anytime soon. Checkout some of the key signs on our journey.... read more

This trip taught us: We cannot control the wind, but we can direct the sail! So we awake to lots of clouds and wind, an amazing breakfast on Maeve's tables, and the vision to "take it to the Bay... !" Just two mile walk down the road will place your feet on Doolin Bay, "but stay away from the pier" says our hostess. The Bay, the storm damage, the majestic - "Grandness" of it all. What a beautiful morning of exploring, visiting merchants and experiencing the Wild Atlantic Way. and who knew? Caves are no longer my "thang". I sure didn't enjoy the trip thru Doolin Cafe today.... read more

Ireland Day 3 I am glad I brought my cape and overshoes, no not the batman cape but the yellow one which all road bikers laugh at. They will learn one day. As I set off this morning it was just a fine drizzle but within an hour it settled down into steady rain, forming big puddles in my cape above my hands and enough to fill my water bottle. This was a shame because once I got onto the minor roads the scenery could have been good, as it was visibility was not good enough to see across the bays. Luckily the wind had dropped from yesterday's ferocious to fast enough to make life harder when it was against me. I was glad of a cafe stop at Kinvarra just after Dunguaire Castle, where I ... read more

OK, today was as close to perfect as a travel day gets for me. I wasn't overly sure what I would do in the morning. I'd planned to catch the bus at around 1pm to continue the tour, buy since we'd gone the other way I had until 4pm to kill. The hostel guy suggested I walk from Doolin to the Cliffs and meet my bus there instead, which is pretty great considering that had been my plan yesterday had I got to the hostel the time I expected. The walk from Doolin to the Cliffs is supposed to take 2-2.5hrs so between my lunch stop and ten thousand photo breaks it took a little over 3 hours. (I took... 630 shots today. Geo: 53.016, -9.37758So this morning I was up early to get packed and out the door. Even though I had only been in Tralee 2 nights I had stuff all over the hotel room, hangovers do not inspire tidiness. I was on the road just after ten and making my way to Tarbert. I was really winging it as I had not done any research on when the ferries leave. Fortunately for me there is one very hour. I had to wait about half an hour for the ferry, and then the trip across the Shannon was only half an hour again. The ferry pulled in at Kilrush and from there I drove to a little place called Kilkee where I stopped for lunch. From there on I think I stopped at every second town for ... read more
