We got all way to the gate and were about 45 minutes before boarding when Robert remembered he forgot his wallet!! Oh my gosh, if only he had remembered earlier since we got to the airport 2 ½ hours before our flight and would have ha plenty of time to go get it. Poor guy - he really felt bad about that but we couldn’t really do anything about it at that point. Luckily we have mom with us and her American express card if we get into a jam. I didn’t bring mine since I knew Robert was going to bring his. Hopefully, my debit card will get us through this vacation. The really bad thing about it is he doesn’t have his drivers license and he really needs to drive us. I don’t want ... read more

Our last full day in Ireland took us to Killarney, a 2 1/2 hour drive from Bunratty, to the Killarney National Park on Friday. This was the Ireland that Shaun and I came to see. Although the weather was bitterly cold, the 3 of us (Lisa stayed behind in Bunratty) walked along a trail beside a beautiful lake, eventually coming upon an ancient cemetery and the ruins of an equally ancient stone church. Finally, a great photo opportunity. Returning to the rental car, we continued along National Hiway 71 into the Ring of Kerry. The twists and turns of the park road were menacing! Fortunately, the amazing view was worth the treacherous roadway. Shaun's driving skills were impressive...... gear shift on the left, steering wheel on the right, driving lane on the left, sheer cliffs off ... read more

This morning the 4 of us set out by taxi to the Limerick City Centre train station for what we thought would be an express train ride to Dublin. The ride was more like a slow boat to China; we enjoyed the leisurely, yet not always smooth, ride, plugged into our respective iPods. We arrived in Dublin just after noon and checked into The Shelbourne Hotel. We stopped for lunch at "Cafe En Seine", (how clever!), for a bit of totally unremarkable yet typical Irish food, then set off to the City Tour Bus stop for the "hop-on, hop-off bus tour". My plan was to sit atop the open 2nd deck for great photography opportunities. Unfortunately, the temp was soooooo bitterly cold, I never even braved the 2nd deck. Eric, Shaun, and I rode the entire ... read more

Eric, Shaun, and I finally arrived in Shannon on Monday morning, after another 5 hour flight, from Newfoundland to Ireland. We of course, still had no luggage, so going through customs was A PIECE OF IRISH CAKE. After checking in at the Dan Dooley Rental Car desk, we sat down to coffee in the arrivals lobby awaiting Lisa's flight. Relieved that she made the flight, she had text messaged us the minute she got aboard, and again when she landed in Shannon. After only 10 minutes, she was through customs WITH luggage, and joined us. We collected the car and the GPS system for it, and were on our way. The sun does not rise to meet you in Ireland in December until after 8am, which meant 4 jet-lagged, weary travelers were on the streets of ... read more

Things did not go well for us on Saturday. Our plane out of ATL was delayed, which caused us to get to Philly just in time to walk right on to the plane for BOS. Unfortunately, our luggage (all 3 of us) went elsewhere. Meanwhile, daughter Lisa flew out of LAX to meet us in BOS. Her flight had a stop over in Minneapolis where the remainder of her flight was canceled!! She was re-routed to Detroit. HER luggage went AWOL (it was checked through to SNN). Back in BOS, we reported our luggage issue to Delta; the Delta rep tracked all 4 pieces and said it would "probably show up in Shannon a day late". Hmmmm, no clothing, no makeup, no scarves or gloves, no meds for Eric. Not good. Oh well! The plane for ... read more

Eric and I are driving from Fairhope to B'ham on friday, where Shaun will join us at Sondra & Ken's home in Alabaster overnight. Our plane leaves from BHM at 7a, so we will be waking at 3. Lisa leaves LAX at 6:30 PST and meets us in Boston around 4pm. Our flight for Shannon (SNN) departs at 7:15pm, giving us plenty of time for several visits to Starbucks. We arrive in Shannon at 6:15am on Sunday. We will pick up the rental car (steering wheel on the right, driving lane on the left), and drive the short 5 miles to Bunratty Castle Garden Holiday Townhomes. I'm certain we will need a taxi to bring along our luggage; neither Lisa nor I believe in the "pack light" myth. Seven day = 14 outfits and at least ... read more

Spending yesterday at home and relaxing was just the cure that I needed for my road weary bones. Even though we stayed up late last night watching this movie called “Buying the Cow”, we were still up at a decent hour and out of the house. We drove to Killarney first so I could catch up on posting my blogs and reading emails, etc. The auto parts store was the first stop so I could order the rest of the gifts that we are taking home for our friends/family. We were at the internet café for about an hour and a half. Our money from different sources finally paid into the checking accounts so we’re sitting good now. I had to do some catching up on our geocaches and the different geocoins and travel bugs. My ... read more
