I had several “housekeeping” items on the London agenda. I had been watching the Iceland weather and saw that the days had been cool and windy and the evenings had been down right brisk and windy. I went shopping again for some sturdier footwear, heavy socks, gloves and a stocking cap. I also needed to update all the upcoming tour information since I really hadn’t even looked at the Iceland trip since I left America. Indeed, I hadn’t even checked what time my plane departed until a couple of days before my flight. Rain dominated the weather forecast for Wednesday thru Friday, so I set Saturday as my tourism day. I set out to visit half a dozen or so attractions that were relatively close to the hotel. Closed access points and closed attractions nixed those ... read more

We started bright and early and drove to the National Park. This park is a UNESCO world heritage site, and is the place of the first parliament in Iceland more than 800 years ago. For several hundred years the delegates, their families, and support community would meet for about two weeks in the summer. They camped and fished in the lake. The lake happens to be in the rift valley where the American plate and the European plate are constantly pulling apart from each other. The lake formed when the part in between sank, and is the largest lake in Iceland. The earliest settler in Iceland was said to have arrived in 870. Man it was windy today, serious wind, the kind that is hard to stand up in. Our bus traveled from the American plate ... read more

Most people don't need air conditioning in Iceland, and normally we wouldn't either, but our room is hot even with the windows open and the 50 degree air blowing in. And yes, we checked to make sure the heat was not on. Anyway, it made for a hot night's sleep. We headed out in the morning to the spectacular Blue Lagoon. There we donned our swimsuits and joined in the fun. The water is hot water from the ground and is full of minerals and sicilia. It is very milky looking. We made our way to the bar in the lagoon where we were able to get a free sparkling wine. It was relaxing and beautiful. We came back for lunch and then toured a museum of some of the oldest houses in Iceland. They were ... read more

Dear All Greetings once more, on this my final entry for my amazing trip this summer. I write this one on my fantastic final few days on this summer adventure exploring Viking lands, and they turned out to be a wonderful wrap up to this journey. I was tired and ready to go home, but still had just that little bit of travel energy within me to explore and enjoy my final few sights. On a cool, crisp and seriously windy Monday morning, I left lovely Grundarfjörður behind and set off on my last car journey on this epic Icelandic road trip, heading southwards to Reykjavík, but with a stop off in lovely little Borgarnes along the way. This was a nice little town, in a dramatic location on a peninsula jutting out into the ocean ... read more

After getting no sleep on the overnight direct flight from Raleigh, we finally landed in Reykjavík. The five minute border patrol took one hour, they needed to make a new sign. We boarded a bus for the hour-long ride to the hotel where we met four or five other buses from other cruise lines arriving at the same time. What a mess! After a quick breakfast we checked in and took a short rest. However, we don't like wasting even a minute of a vacation, so we headed out to see Reykjavík on foot. We walked the harbor and then headed to the shopping district which had some quaint, Icelandic architecture. In the midst of all of the nice shops was a "Phallus Museum". Needless to say, you don't have to think very hard to realize ... read more

A 5am wake up has not been unusual here, but of course, today I was fast asleep when multiple alarms went off…just in case! This is the price we pay for having breakfast before we leave. It’s an excellent help yourself buffet here so we have decided it’s worth the get up. Our taxi arrives promptly at 6.15am and whisks us to Kefvalik airport in ten minutes. Here we join the ‘speedy boarding’ queue, which may not be quite as speedy since the desk is unmanned. Maybe it doesn’t need to open as early because they are going to be speedy? Anyway the other queue is horrendous so it can’t be any worse. Our check in has open ended and it’s all quite quick. Though anyone with a soft sided bag has to walk back round ... read more

Nothing much to do today. The van has to be back at 3pm and the place we’re staying is not that scenic. We have a late get up. It’s apparent that this campsite is the one most people are using for their final night before a flight home as it’s only eight minutes drive to Kefvalik airport and all the car and van rental places are nearby. Suitcases are strewn all over the grass and people are madly cleaning the interiors if their vans. I go for a shower. I’m first in the queue but forty minutes later I’m still first in the queue. What IS that woman doing in there? Ian suggests I use the mens. He has seen a couple emerging from it whilst he was having a wash. As there is no one ... read more

There’s something rather nice about lying in bed all wrapped up warm listening to the rain hammering on tent canvas, or in our case van roof, all night. That’s what we had last night. The only main problem is no loo in this van but I made Ian park right outside the loo block so a mad dash over isn’t too bad. It’s not so nice to hear the rain hammering when you are about to get up. Loo dash is essential so it has to be done. We had hoped to do a nice walk this morning then go to the swimming pool. But the weather is not nice. Black clouds overhead. We have a slow start and debate an alternative. We have a slight break in the cloud and decide we will go whale ... read more

This morning we are going into Reykjavik. It’s possible to get a bus from here but Ian claims he’s happy to drive. I have located a good parking spot near the old harbour and the drive looks relatively straightforward. We just have to contend with the increase if traffic - which is nothing compared to other capital cities, but a lot compared to what we have become used to in Iceland! Our journey involves a drive through a 6km tunnel which goes under the bay at Hvalfjordur, saving us around 80km of ‘driving round the inlet’ time. We arrive at the old harbour area of Reykjavik, nabbing the one remaining space in the free parking area. Very handy as it’s also very near to the old town area that we want to be in. We begin ... read more
